My Maxima gets over 31 mpg avg. Should this be possible?
I can pull 30-32 mpg highway, as long as I don't go too fast.
I had an annoying commute all summer - 55mph road with lots of traffic lights. I'd have to get all the way up to 55, then stop, then do it again. and again. and again. It was like 25-30 traffic lights over about 12.5 miles. I got about 24mpg doing that.

Yeah, I don't understand what's up w/ my mileage:
The goods:
-New Fuel filter (from 300zx
)
-New plugs
-91-93 gas at all times
-Synthetic oil changed like 3k ago
The bads:
-CEL for transmission signal - I have no idea what this one means really, but it may be possibly causing my torque converter to engage too early?
-5.5 gen 17" wheels
-Little bit of audio weight..not a lot though
I get between 20 and 23 every tank

And confirmed: in an auto, its 0.694 while in a 5spd top gear is 0.795
I would have thought that the top gear in the tranny with more selections would be taller, but apparently its the other way around. Guess Nissan figured manual drivers have more fun. Now I really want to do the swap. And now I also know why I drive with O/D off unless I'm going over 45 or so. The car just feels so numb in overdrive with the auto, and it always wants to shift. Damn fuel efficient shifting algorithm.
I think some of you are still thinking backwards about bigger wheels/tires. Ecomodders often put larger-diameter tires on their cars to get better mileage because it has the same effect as putting a taller final gear in the car. There is a smaller negative effect from doing this in that larger wheels/tires are typically heavier, but the overall effect is still an improvement in gas mileage. And as stated before, the mileage would read less because the speedo/odometer would think that the car is moving more slowly and less distance. If someone has increased their tire diameter and is reporting unusually good mileage, this is not due to error from the larger tires because the error would run in the opposite direction. However, if someone posted that they got 40 MPG from putting 13's on their Max, we would have endless reasons to make fun of that person.
There are several. Fueleconomy.gov has a feature like that. Ecomodder.com is a site I frequent that has a good trip log feature. I'm sure there are others. Ecomodder isn't like Facebook, really. It's just a site with a forum and some interesting tools for logging gas mileage.

The torque converter lock-up is just as important as the taller 4th gear in the auto, but yes...either way, it's much taller than the 5-speed's 5th gear. 70 MPH in the auto should be about 2300 RPM and in the 5-speed it's closer to 3000 (if I'm remembering right).
I average 19-20 on my Cal speced 99 i30. I have a really heavy foot and my car had approx 100-200 lbs of weight in it and slow leaks in the tires.
I did empty the trunk, inflate my tires and drive like an old lady for approx 25. After emptying my trunk, I had to re-adjust my lights. I always fill with cali's highest, 91 octane. Engine has 8Xk miles.
My smog data says my engine is running great. Get a look at my Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide and Nitrogen Oxide Part Per Million readings. LOL Smog tech said the readings like this make them have a higher chance of getting inspected.

I wonder if I have an exhaust leak
I guess i'll have to pick up a Y pipe one of these days and fix that crap
Anyone with Volk TE37s wanna trade for some 5.5gen wheels?
I'll trade you my 16" '00 GLE wheels for your 5.5gen wheels. Lighter.
And, if you think quads are useless, then maybe I shouldn't tell you that I have some H1 projectors that I just picked up. Not sure where they're going yet. I have hi/lo/fogs, and IDK which projectors to use in which places lol.

My boat anchors > 00 gle wheels. However, I have some 16s in the works that should help my problem

Proj. fogs would actually be useful. Way more so than dedicated high-beam projos. Our stock fogs really suck in the....fog...
I get around 25mpg average with a CEL on. Take under consideration on where you live also. If you live where its flat like FL you will get better MPG..... If your like me in PA with mountains and hills its gonna be different.
I only hit 3000rpm at like 85-90 and I have an auto... As for mpg, I also got 30.5 on a recent roadtrip and get in the mid-high 20s on every single tank. Haven't done any major repairs in ages...just air filter and oil. Also got an exhaust leak.
I have 171k on my 5sp and usually set the cruise on the highway and can get just around 28 mpg...if I am 80% highway.
It is hard for me to keep off of the gas
I love to drive the shizzzzznit out of my Max.
If I baby it, I might be able to get 30ish.
"I cannot stand people who are not up to highway speed before gettting on the highway!!!!
" GAS IS ON THE RIGHT!!!!!!!! .......there is my rant for the day

The poster directly above me knows what he's talking about.
They set the mileage requirements in a specific testing way. If your conditions are better than that, you can do better than the EPA rated mileage. Less restrictive breathing for the motor, drafting, very light on the gas, not doing sudden stops and starts, having a chilly day with good air density, ~35 psi in the tires, all of this stuff can improve gas mileage beyond the EPA rating.

???? I doubt it.....2nd thing , they test the car in best conditions , so you'll be amazed by the fuel economy
...
All auto manufacturers advertising in the US have to advertise ratings based on an EPA test cycle, which is far from ideal conditions.
It's funny, but after 6 years of owning this car I finally got more than 30 MPG on a trip a few weeks ago. On a roughly 300 mile round trip to the beach with 98% highway driving my car got 32 MPG. It's a 5 speed on 235/45/17 tires, and I was basically doing the speed limit most of the time which was usually 55-65. The five following days going to work (city driving) I got 19 MPG, but I was driving more aggressively than on the beach trip.
I know for a fact that I got 31mpg on my trip to Maxus. ~500 miles on one tank. Jime was telling me that he was getting 36mpg, because of his weight reduction and automatic transmission. I also recorded 31-32 mpg several other times this summer, usually on I-95.
Heh, I love it. Can I sig quote this?
I came online to do some research tonight. I don't care if everyone hates me for this but there is NO way that a 4th gen maxima is getting 30+ mpg. I drive a '97 5spd with 103k miles. At 65mph I average 25mpg.
If I were to calculate fuel consumption based upon my odometer, I'd get 35+ mpg.
The explanation is simple. My speedometer is off (overly optimistic) by 10mph. So... when i'm going 65 i'm really going 55 mph. This was confirmed with 2 different gps units that I own. So, to all of you with this 4 cylinder type of fuel mileage, calibrate your speedometer using a gps unit. For anyone wondering, I have 215/45/17 tires, aftermarket rims.
I'm sure the argument will continue but Nissan would love to test the v6 that get's 30mpg from the factory.

You don't know jack. I've gotten 32mpg on the highway - and that's at mostly 87mph average. In mixed highway/city I get high 19's driving like an old lady (never redline, try to keep under 3000rpm). If I drive like a maniac, it goes down to 17....
My $0.02
I am on my 2nd '97 Maxima. Both are autos. I live in Minneapolis / St. Paul and have a 25 mile commute each way (traffic can be heavy and slow at times almost every day each way). The only mod is a K&N air filter (if you want to call that a mod). Always run premium gas and perform all preventative maint, etc. and fill up at the same pump (when possible) and allow the pump to shut itself off for consistency.
My 1st one (traded it in 1 year ago with 175k miles on it) I would baby, do neutral coasting, slow starts, you know, the hyper mileage stuff and would consistently average 30mpg.
On road trips where I can find a non-oxygenated premium pump, if I drive 55-60 I will get 32 or so. This is the case with either car.
If I put my foot into either car, I will get 16 - 23 mpg. If I drive light but not baby it, I consistently get ~25 mpg.
Do any of you watch Top Gear? See the comparison between the Prius and the M3? They raced the Prius around their track and the M3 just had to stay on its bumper. The Prius got 17 mpg, the M3, 19 mpg. Its not always what you drive, its how you drive it. So have fun when you want to have fun, and be frugal when you have to. Just don't skip the maintenance.
Other cars
'09 Vibe 33-38mpg (1.8 slow)
'66 Barracuda 10-14 mpg (5.9 fast)

I get about 22 mph mixed w/bad knock sensor (too busy/lazy to put it in) and I drive with my floor jack + other crap in my trunk like an idiot..... just remembered why I'm the man.
