Oil change with filter: 4.25 US qts
Oil change without filter: 3.9 US qts

Ideally, your engine should not use a drop of oil between changes. But that is hardly the case. When I first switched to synthetic, I used approx 1/2 qt between 5000 change intervals. Now I don't burn any oil at all.

Has anyone else also experience this when they switched to synthetic? I just switched at 50k and had to add a quart. I think it may be because I had to have a new oil pressure switch put on at the Nissan dealer and some may have come out then?? Or I am hoping that is the case.

I noticed this also...I recently switched to synthetic and had to add 1/2 quart after about 3500 miles...I have just over 5K miles on the oil now, and it hasn't consumed any more at all. Does anyone know why this is??

Yes, I know why... when I bought my RX-7 a few years ago, the guy who sold it to me (who happened to be a mechanic specializing in RX-7's) told me to never use synthetic oil in the car. This is because the rex had a rotary engine that burns oil by design, and synthetic doesn't burn nearly as well as dinosaur oil. So there you have it... your Maxima doesn't lose oil because:
a) you don't have any leaks
and
b) synthetic oil doesn't burn

Negligable amount. An engine in excellent running condition shouldn't burn more than a few ounces. BTW, why change oil every 3K miles, the interval is 7500 miles.

I change it every 3K, use Castrol Syntech Blend, never use a drop. Keeps the engine nice and clean too.

There is No point to change synthetic every 3k...Synthetic does not break down like conventional oil...they say every 10k is aloud, 6k is safe and thats what I do.

I just switched over to the stuff and didnt burn any on the transition.

I use Mobil 1

and I change it every 3000-3500 miles because I can feel the performance beginnning to deteriorate. After I change it up, smooth as can be again.
