white gauges = SE.

black gauges = GXE/GLE

thats all you need to know.

my 4th gen also had the lever to open the trunk. i think the 4.5 is when they started with the button on the door.

SE
White guage faces
"Sport" Cloth or leather seats
Basic or BOSE stereo
May have sunroof
Black outer window trim
Body color door handles
5spd or auto trans
Spoiler
Fog lights
15" blade-style (95-96) or 16" 5 spoke (97-99) alloy wheels
Body color grill on 97-99 models
Manual A/C or climate control
"Sport" suspension
Electronically controlled front engine mount on automatic transmission cars
Liquid filled rear shock mounts
(In Canada there is a model called the ES which is like an SE minus the BOSE, leather, sunroof, and spoiler (All standard on a Canadian SE). But, it does include the VLSD trans.)

My 96 has the door trunk release and gas tank lever on the floor. Maybe this is where everyone is getting a little mixed up?

Its an SE. My car is the same. I have fogs, spoiler with LED brake light, white face gauges....I also have a trunk lever on the floor, no sunroof, no leather. Pretty much its a base model SE.

my 95 has the trunk release on the door but i have a GXE. I think you can also tell what model you have by numbers/letters on the vin plate on the left side of the engine bay on the firewall.

I would be careful with that though. I run into MANY white gauged GLEs and GXEs at the JY. Many people install white gauges from SE cuz they're cool so that is NOT the only think you need to know lol

The popper button was used through out all 95-99s it was just more of an option during 95 and possibly 96. My GXE did not have the button but was prewired, nothing a leather interior swap with leather appointed door panels couldn't fix, now I have a button

Well, just because it was an old lady doesnt mean anything... she could've had a bad gauge cluster and went to a shop that could've picked one up from the junk yard and installed it for her. Do you have chrome body molding and door handles?

"TO DECODE THE VIN PLATE:
Raise your hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first five characters are BLHUL. The sixth character is the trim level designator, defined as follows:
E = GXE
G = GLE
V = SE"

From the faq.

Also the steel wheels are a dead giveaway it's a GXE.

But hey, I have 95/96 head lights and no fogs on my car, maybe someone sold em for a quick profit.

Exactly, I have a 96 with black guages and on the trim designator I have a V, meaning its an SE.

wow that sucks.. trust me my car is an SE i guess i was wondering what the lowest options you could get with the se.. i guess i just assumed it being an SE it would have came with more then it did.

i have fogs, white guages, black window trim, handles same color as car, had spoiler with brake light removed now, no light in back window so i'm pretty positive its an SE..

I've got a bone-stock (until I need to replace the exhaust) 1996 Black SE with bose, black leather, sunroof, automatic climate control and a 5 speed. However, I don't have heated seats and mirrors which would be really nice. and the stupid sunroof is broken.

Dude, you should feel very proud of yourself. You've made it to my list. Officially the first and only red car I accept with black wheels on. I think red cars and black wheels look fugly as hell but your max is just plain ****in sexy. Oh and I should correct myself, its not a car, its a Maxima.

dude, if ur car has black gauges, it is NOT an SE, regardless of what you've been told. that VIN thing is probably inaccurate, no disrespect.

wow really? thank you sir!!! i agree red with black wheels doesn't look good but the style and the red lip on the outside makes it work with the car..

the wheels are rota p45r 18x9.5 +30 offset foe the trunk i bondo the holes and painted the trunk.. thats how i solved that problem

I concur, I never knew that but it now makes sense as my GXE was non keyless and had the lever. I swear...freakin 3rd gen maximas were far more generously loaded for their time.

My effin' 93 GXE came with power trunk button, heated power mirrors, keyless entry pad, FAR more Superior seats (ergonomically speaking), variable speed wiper switch, IRS... for a GXE that is pretty damn good if you ask me.

3rd gens were VERY well equipped for their time. its also that sort of thing that catapulted the 4DSC into sport/luxury fame

i have a gxe and my obdometer is digital. i've seen SE's wwith machanical obdometers. i dont think a cluster swap would be possible. i dont think i've ever seen a digital obdometer in an SE, but then i havent seen that many SE interiors.

Depends on the year. Both my SE's (98 and 99) have digital odometers.
