Short Throw Shifter

Ok...im lookin for a new mod for my car. I hear short throw shifters are good for quicker shifts. But i dont want to install it if it decreases driveability or overall performance. I saw a kit on ebay for like 80 bucks.

Has anyone installed a short throw and is it really worth it?

I have the cold air intake and performance exhaust. Any other mods i should consider?

Be weary of the Nismo STS's on ebay, those are not authentic. A few people have broken them here on the org.

I have a B&M, no driveability issues here. Love it.

Pacesetter is a good one to consider as well.

Get a ypipe, best bang for the buck mod if you're looking for a little bit more performance.

+1 for the YPipe mod, definitely the best performance improvement I did... not to mention makes everything so much cleaner and easier to work around underneath the car.

BUUUUT, about that shifter... Well, this is tappin pretty hard on my memory, but about a year ago I decided to buy the cheap nameless shortshifter off ebay. I remember it bein around 25 or 30 bucks or something. Looked like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NISSA...Q5fAccessories
Now you want a review on this? Ooooh MAN, was that install a mistake. I wasn't about to quit, that was for sure, but it sucked. Droppin the YPipe, easy (as previously mentioned because I have an aftermarket one), gettin to the assembly up there to drop the shifter, not bad, no worries. Putting the new ball in the old assembly, easy. At that point, it was 'installed'. Then the problems started. The metal heat shield for the exhaust had clearance issues, and I had to use a hammer to bend it around the new shifter. But the biggest issue was that the factory screw wouldn't fit through their bearing hole. So I had to head up to Lowes and buy hardware to bolt it up underneath the car. Important note here, I used a lock washer (the broken looking kind) and two nuts to hold it on with some LocTite. That lasted about 6 months, then randomly one day, shifting became nearly impossible since the nuts had broken lose and fallen off. The fix was replacing the nuts with locking nuts (the kind with silicon inside, can only be used once), doubled up, AND loctite... Still secure!

Problems. Despite the installation difficulties, which in and of themselves weren't difficult, just unexpected and disappointing, the install was still completed in one afternoon (although not in the single hour I had set aside for the project!). It does effectively reduce the throw, and I personally could never go back to the stock shifter. Unfortunately, it moves the actual shift **** location considerably forward. This wouldn't *normally* be a problem, however, if I'm in 1st or 3rd gear, I cannot open my doubleDIN eclipse headunit where the whole face drops forward and downward. Yea, another clearance issue. Granted, it only took me once to figure it out, and a second time to remember never to do it again, and now it's no longer an issue in my mind... but just for consideration.

A year of writing later, my conclusion... Despite the poor craftsmanship, the unpredictable install, and the present clearance issue with my headunit... I STILL wouldn't go back to the factory shifter. Especially considering how cheap the thing was. BUT... if I had a better budget, I would know better than to buy this, especially since it's made out of billet aluminum, which is subject to fatigue, and it's not a possibility, rather a guarantee, that it WILL eventually break... it's just a question of before or after you live and die with your Max. Considering how thick it was though, I can't imagine that under normal loading conditions that it would just crack without rather intentional abuse, i.e. slamming through gears all day every day, having ur girl laying over it while she's preoccupied helping u drive, etc.

the end. lol.

I have the same one as above. Installed it in '04. But I cut off an additional 2" off the top and it makes a lot more clearance. Just my .02

I bought the same ebay POS from a friend who never got around to putting it on his car. I had the exact same installation problems. Needed hardware, Hardware I bought wasnt good enough, and replaced it with better stuff. I also cut a couple inches off. I only had this shifter a week before the damn thing broke. It didnt crack, but the shifter stalk came loose from the ball. So when I'd go to shift the shifter would slightly rotate and I couldnt get the car in gear.

Thanks ppl.

So who has a good shifter. The ones i saw on ebay, pacesetter and B&M all look different. I want an entire bolt up assembly kit. I dont mind spending a lil extra if its a complete package and good quality.

The one u guys bought from ebay doesnt come with anything!!!

I was lookin at this shifter hehe.

They are all entire bolt ups.
The B&M is most likely the best one out. Pacesetters are adjustable, but a bit harder to find.
The link you posted is a B&M knock off.

The regular shifters usually do will come with a bolt and nut. Problem is that sometimes the bolt provided wont fit into the shift rod and the provided nut works its way off in time. Why his didnt is beyond me, crappy seller.
Like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.
The B&M style shifter is a different type of shifter, and requires you to replace some of the OEM pieces and requires the use of a snap ring tool. The snap rings are a bit of a pain in the ****.
The link you posted doesnt include the bolt that goes through the shift rod which means you reuse your old one.

Try and find a real B&M, you won't regret it.

Seeing the problems with fitment and the cost of the good shifters I ruled out buying a sts. I had the local junkyard pull a stock shifter for me (the local and only jy, and not a self service ) and while I did my red/clears in the oven I put the shifter in there too, just the rod and the white ball thing, and after about 10 minutes I think (longer than the tails took) I pulled it out and using gloves moved the ball upward, basing its position on name brand sts's, but then a little less for the synchronizers' sake and then let it cool and set. I used some strong loctite to keep it in place also since originally there are a few rounded indents holding it in place. I recently just did this and being at college in the winter have not had the ability to install yet but im hoping for a nice setup.

Agreed... i dont have the resources to lift and support the car so I scratched the sts idea.

let me know who the install goes. What temp did u set it at?

Yes, the cheapest priced one you can buy too..

It was a low setting like 250 or something since the tail lights were in there, but it was taking a little longer than the tails so i cranked it up towards the end but prob only to 325...I dont really recall. Ya Im hoping I can do it sometime soon but I have no clue.
