ebay maf's any good?
Hi All,
My car stalls occationally and I am thinking of changing maf sensor. Maxima mafs are selling on ebay for around 100$, but I am not sure how good/reliable ebay stuff is. On google search, couple of people indicated that ebay maf's didn't solve their stalling problem but nissan's maf did solve it. I am wondering if anyone purchased (non nissan made) maf's from ebay if they are happy with them. Thanks Nitin |
personally, i would just buy a used oem one from classifieds.
|
Just buy OEM. Either used from the classifieds or new from DaveB.

did you scan for codes??? wtf, fixing a car is not a guessing game!!! do it right or gtfo!!! thank you

Usually the random stalling does not throw codes. But couple of times car was idleing rough, pulling maf cable immediately smoothed out the idle. Moreover after 14+ years usage with after market intake, I think maf is on last leg any way.
Also search stalling issues on forum, 90% of time before maf is completely dead, multimeter wont detect that its bad. So yes I am not 100% sure if maf is the culprit, but its worth changing. last month DaveB quoted me 286$ + shipping for maf, ebay has them for 108$ shipped. to resolve this I posted question on board. Unfortunately I didn't had much luck with used sensors, so I will skip that route. Lastly for "mr Max ride 41", I have seen enough behaviorally challenged people on this board, Arguing/talking with them is just waste of time, so i will just ignore you. |
I'll be the first to NOT recommend buying a used MAF. I personally have done this and the thing died months later. I am now running a brand new ebay MAF in my car with absolutely no problems. I say go for it.

I agree I think you should either buy a new Ebay MAF or a close to new OEM one, because if you buy a old OEM MAF that is about to die anyway, then its a bad investment. |
|
Hey sometimes people need to hear obvious information!
Don't worry buddy I would do the same for you too. |
i can agree with that.
|
Check the wires going to the maf, some times the connector wires deteriorate and come off or oxidize and might also cause random stalling issues but i say no ebay mafs get oem
|
buy new OEM. i had a bad experience with an ebay maf, lasted for 2 days. yea. 2 days. then i went to the stealership and just had them do one for me there (it was under warranty anyways, i just prefer to do work myself)
|
The MAF I purchased on ebay has a limited lifetime warranty. I see a lot of people preaching "OEM ONLY" but nobody with any substantial proof that the quality difference (whatever that may be) makes a difference and/or justifies paying over double the price. I've been buying aftermarket sensors for a variety of vehicles with no issues whatsoever. Most sensors on our cars really aren't THAT complex, guys.

it has nothing to do with complexity. were not idiots. its reliability. sometimes a guaranteed quality part is worth the more expensive price as oppose to taking a risk on ebay. thats all. |

Damn, some of you guys are crazy. I'll warranty a used maf for life (once only) and do it for $50/shipped. 4th gen maf's are bulletproof, I've had 3 different motors in my I30, 2 transmissions, and I've had that maf on and off and with and without filters and swapped intakes and plenums more times than I can count and never had a problem. The one on my '95 saw nitrous and 10psi all summer and is now on my employees girls car (that had it's original maf w/280K get run over). I've cut them with sawzalls to do a wai, dropped them, etc. I think you guys either go overboard with your "maf cleaning" or filter oil or something. Just throw a used one in there and forget about it.
|
I wouldn't call them bullet proof based on one scenario. I've seen a good share of failed MAF threads on here.

On the other hand, i think an ebay one will work just fine...Y dont you pick one up and report back with a review?
|
FYI BEFORE CHANGING THE MAF
ok for about 2 years my max would die (shut off when coming to a complete stop) about ONCE every 2 months, then it started happening more than once a day for the past 2 months... so after being lazy and not wanting to change it, i bought the MAF CLEANER THE SH*T WORKED AND ONLY COST 6 BUCKS!!!! so invest in the 6 bucks before buying a new maf.... My car hasn't shut off in 3 weeks, and the rough idle start and noise in the morning was gone! Goodluck |

I am probably going to get an Ebay MAF as well. I know why my MAF is messed gone.... I kinda did a whoopsie and covered it up with Solder. Shes been working fine but not up to par... lol
|
I got a used, tested OEM MAF with a 30 day warranty for $34 on ebay, so you can get OEM on ebay, not just in the classified section or from Dave B.

I was cleaning it and a nice flat head screw driver seemed to hit some very delicate parts. lol. However Solder worked for now. lol
:nono: Let that be a lesson to you, screwdrivers and MAFs dont mix lol. TO OP, I have hrd mixed reviews about EBay MAFs. I would say try a real good cleaning with MAF cleaner and see if that helps. Autozone has reman MAFs for 200 bucks. It comes with a 1 yr warranty. I know its a lil pricey but i wd feel more comfortable with a reman MAF from autozone than from EBay. But ebay is so much cheaper. If u can find new from Ebay for less than 100 bucks.... See if it works but i do remember someone buying a MAF from Ebay (new or used i cant remember) and it did not works O and SEARCH...there is already a thread specifcally about the ebay MAFs |

Dont replace stuff without cleaning/scanning/checking everything. Pop off your system from the TB out, and see if anythings in it, then start playing the guessing game (half the fun) and....... do that thing of (fun). Then after its fixed, call it a day. :D |
How does a dirty MAF look?
|
dirty :gotme:
|
haha. I think my MAF is dirty right now. There's no CEL's right now. But the car randomly stalled two times today. It restarted fine.
