Windshield washer fluid doesn't spray

It just stopped working one day, any ideas as to why.
The reservoir is full but nothing comes out when i push the spray button on the right side of the steering.

Thanks!

Can you hear a "whine" from the WW pump when you use it? If yes, your sprayers are clogged and need to be cleaned out, usually you can do it with the sharp tip of a safety pin.

If you don't hear the pump motor making noise, then you need to buy a new pump. They are about 20 bucks at Rock Auto, I have one on my workbench right now that I need to install in my 96 Max.

thats basically it man what trooplewis said

This happened to my neighbors maxima. His pump was running, but nothing was making it to the nozzle. It turned out that the hoses and nozzles were completely clogged with bits of paper from the inside of a washer fluid jug lid. You know, that little paper disc that falls out of the lid sometimes. At least that's what I think it was.
I was able use compressed air to blow out the hoses, but I had to replace the nozzles because I couldnt get all of the paper slurry out.

Never heard of that happenng, but I've often wondered if any of it gets in oil pans or radiators or even gas tanks with the foil crap they seal bottles with.

Usually if its plugged, it's the nozzles on top of the hood that have excess wax in them from the last time you polished your hood.

well, theres no sound at all when i push the spray button.
also, there are 4 sprayer nozzles (2 small ones for each side) and not one of them works, i dont think all 4 can get clogged at once. is there a motor or something that is responsible for the spray pump?

burgundyblues66 Nov 14, 2009 09:02 AM

sorry, i didnt see you post trooplewis, rockauto looks good for that part.
which part number is it? it gives me 4 different pumps for my car.

also, where is the thing located? is it safe to say its a problem with the pump if it doesnt make a sound??

make sure your wires are good,
on mine i had to re pin the plug because the wires inside the plug actually were rotted and broke

Nozama Nov 14, 2009 06:25 PM

Since you can't hear it it's the plug or the pump but why wouldn't all four nozzles get plugged at once?

One hose feeds four nozzles and the pump will push fluid to the place with least resistance which is always going to be the nozzles that aren't plugged right up until they plug too.

I love rockauto... If it's for sure your pump and there's no fuse in the system, definitely hit them up.

burgundyblues66 Nov 14, 2009 06:52 PM

where is the pump?

trooplewis Nov 14, 2009 09:24 PM

I'll change out mine in the morning and give you more info, but I understand that the pump has to be accessed from below the car with the cover panel removed near the oil filter. The pump shoud be just downstream from the washer fluid container.

nitromax Nov 14, 2009 09:40 PM

it's on the bottom of the reservoir, behind the r/f inner fender cover. check your fuses first.

Jriv815 Nov 15, 2009 04:25 PM

I would definately check the fuse of the system first. Dont automatically assume that it is a mechanical failure. With the cars that are on the road there is more to worry about electronically than mechanically. Check the fuse, then check the plug at the pump. Check to see if there is power coming to the pump from the battery when the switch is actuated. And...if there is power and ground at the pump then using a 9 volt battery and 2 little wires, find the power and ground pins at the pump and attach the wires. If the pump doesnt do anything...then you have just found the problem.

OK, I installed a new washer pump today, It is a bit of a messy job, but not difficult; takes about 15 minutes.

I posted a mini now-to thread here:

IN my case it was definitely the pump that was shot. A soon as I put the new one in, everything worked OK again.

maxima209 Jul 11, 2012 01:16 AM

my washer "t" broke and i was wondering where i could find one?

2brosgixxer Jul 11, 2012 01:30 AM

Any parts store should have something that'll work. Or just pick one off a wreck at a junkyard.
