VLSD

Ive done a little searching, but havent satisfied my curiosity. Has any one ever tried to swap a VLSD or LDS from an auto/5spd I30 (or ANY other NISSAN product) into a 4th gen 5spd?

On a related note, my father once installed extra side gear shims in a Dana 44 open diff, the carrier itself looks very similar. This resulted in a very tight diff that worked well. Just an option short of Jimes Lincoln Locker.

Ive been trying to find an answer to this too. I can find numerous I30 LSD autos but no manuals so ive been trying to find out if i can just swap the differential between the auto and 5spd...I thought the auto diff was to big but I havent found any definite answers...

WHERE?? GOOD GOD MAN, GIVE US LINKS! Really though, I'd like to know the particulars. Theres gotta be toasted trannys floating around with good LSDs. And no, I don't want to do a tranny swap, but I would do synchros and diff swap.

Quickywd01,
None of your search results pertained to my original question. I want to swap a VLSD DIFFERENTIAL into my existing TRANSMISSION. I dont want to do a tranny swap, which is what your search resulted in.

Again, if you know of a VLSD DIFFERENTIAL that will swap into an OPEN DIFFERENTIAL TRANSMISSION, please share what you know.

I doubt it would swap in as the case is probably different. Can't tell you for sure so you would have to try it but if you're interested then swapping the whole trans would be better. Good luck with the project.

No, it has not been done because it won't fit. The bearing on the driver's side of the VLSD transmission is much, much larger than that on the open diff, no way to fit it in the open diff case. You can't just swap the case half either, because the bolt patterns are different between the two unfortunately. You have to swap the entire transmission.

Regards to your second question, all open differentials look pretty similar, but adding shims behind the spider gears will only serve to prematurely gall the gears and ruin the diff. I wouldn't do it (I worked in race transmissions for 3.5 years so I've seen the results of this many times.)
