Try putting a thick towel around the shift **** before putting the vice grip on there.

Dang is the leather shift **** in good shape/ If so, what a waste to destroy it. Why not get a STS and put your new **** on it.

Cutting it WONT make a STS. It will shorten the height, and make shifts notchier but will not shorten the shifts.

NO NO NO...I jus had this prob!

Listen...u are prolly gripping the **** from the bottom. You have to grip the **** from the top and twist. If u turn from the bottom then all u doin is twisting the bottom of the **** and tearing the **** apart. The shift rod is threaded at the top of the rod..take ur pliers or visegrips and twist at the top of the **** (the fat end) counterclockwise

I destroyed my stock one when I took it off, granted it was already ripped on one of the seams, I had the hardest time taking it off.

IIRC, they put some sort of loctite on the threads at the factory, which can make it an absolute pita to get off.

Ya, if stock leather shifter is in good shape KEEP IT! the ones at autozone look cool but trust me non of them are comfortable and nutthen like OEM Quality.

I had the same problem, just used a tower over it with some vice grips and called it a day. Still looks good.

Thanx 4 all the input. The thing is definitely glued on there. Either that or the strongest roid head japanese man ever put it on at the factory...I still can't get it off without destroying it so Im gonna either cut it off at the base and rethread the shifter or just rip it apart until I can get it off. I like the B&M pistol grip shifter it's what I'm used to using.

What's the shortest, meaning shorter than stock, STS available? Stealin? Pacesetter? Custommaxima? etc.......

And BTW I removed the resonator from the intake and it's a noticeable difference in sound and throttle response.......

I have big plans for this car but it's gonna be a slow start due to financial reasons that Im sure most of us are experiencing...

It depends on how low you go, the lower you cut it the notchier it becomes.

Threadjackin': as long as we're on the subject, anyone got a recommendation for a good ****? The one that the PO installed is nice and heavy but it is completely the wrong size for the shift lever, so it just slips right off. Ideally I'd get an OEM **** but I can't find them anywhere.

I'd like something decently weighty but, uh, one that fits the car would be nice. I'd also like the shift pattern on it 'cause I need to teach a total manual noob how to drive and she doesn't know the shift pattern and...uh, I don't want to spend more than, like, $20-30.

I'll totally do eBay if there's a good one y'all can recommend. I guess the one I dislike least on eBay is this one so that's my first choice and I guess I might buy it unless someone has had a horrible experience with it? or with ebay ***** in general?
