Technical Question

Ok heres my problem, over the past few weeks I have noticed a few things about my car. First of all when I first start the car and drive, I notice a clicking-type noise. To me it actually sounds like more of a vibrating sort of noise but it comes from the front passenger side of the car. It happens on hard acceleration regardless of whether or not I am turning. People have told me it's the CV joint but I'm not exactly positive. I checked for grease in that area to confirm but I havent found any.

Now I have noticed something else about the car more recently. Whenever I get above about 55-60 mph the car gets real bumpy like Im driving on a gravel road almost. Past 75 it gets better but the vibration still is there but sporadicly (sp?)

Now I have only two guesses, CV joint or wheel bearing. What do you guys think? More importantly, what are the consequences of driving on it?

The clicking could be from a wheel bearing or torn CV boot, take your tire off or jack up your car and check the black rubber boot for any tears.

The bumpyness could be from a flat spot in your tire. I had a problem like that, it is a result of locking up your breaks, or trying to smoke the front tires with your e-brake (parking brake) engauged. When you do this, you sometimes drag the back tires and wear a flat spot in the tire.

check your lugs make sure they are all tight. jack the car up USE JACK STANDS with the front wheels off the ground grab the top and bottom of the wheel firmly and try and wiggle it, do this with the steering wheel locked and grip it firmly on the left and right side try and wiggle it. if it wiggles its probably a wheel bearing. check your cv boots to see if they are torn. there might be something lodged underneath somewhere check for any little sticks or anything. goodluck

This sounds like a bad ball joint to me. I had a really bad one on my old car, and it felt just as you described.

It could be the clicking too, but I don't know that for sure.
