Cracked windshield because of rust??
Hi,
I got two crack lines on the bottom windshield under the wiper arm. In the last two days it has been spreading very fast..1/2" a day The crack is moving up towards the passenger side, and it looks like it started at the bottom (just under the passenger wiper and out to the edge of the windshield).
The garage guy tells me it's because of rust and the windshield has moved. Three years ago I had the windshield removed and removed all the rust around it (maybe the job wasn't done right?).
So here's my question, is it possible for rust to form under the windsheild to crack it? (I don't see any visible rust)
Thanks

how did you get rust behind your windshield? the areas that your describing are supposed to be sealed with an RTV to hold the windshield in place as well as seal it from the possibility of leaks... if it were to rust than it apparently wasn't sealed correctly or at all.

Got pics? A rock hitting your windshield resulting in a crack can cause this and when it's cold out the crack will spread like wildfire. Rust under the windshield would require the windshield to be removed for proper repair. Take a picture of it if you can and post it up.

Rust forming on the mounting frame will crack the windshields. Two years ago my front windshield formed a 4" crack under the inspection sticker. With corrision coverage on my auto insurance I had it replaced at no chrage at JN phillips auto glass.
After removing the windshield the technician cleaned off some of the rust forming on the frame. He said it's common for rusted frames to crack the windshield.

The answer is yes - you can get a cracked windshield because of rust. I had a similar problem with my 98. Few years ago i had the windshield replaced and the repair guy cut the paint when he was removing the old windshield and never primed it properly. It does not have to be a large cut in the paint to allow moisture to get in. Once you get moisture in - all hell breaks loose. I live in Massachusetts so we get a lot of moisture and it only took about 6 months to have some nasty rust show up. Not long after the windshield started leaking and guess what - a year down the road the windshield cracked. Had to get all the rust repaired before they could install a new windshield (the guy told me he can't put it in because it was illegal because the windshield will not adhere properly and could come off - supposedly a safety hazard).
