Y Pipe install

Hey guys ... hate to start a new thread, but I couldn't find what I am after in the search.

I bought a Y pipe for my 98' but I can't find a shop to put it on. (I know, taking my car to a shop .... yakk! Howerver, I don't have the time or place to do this job) What I am being told is that they will not remove my pre-cats and I don't have a cat (I have a test pipe). Anyone know ways around this issue? I also live in a state that does inspections (although I'm not too worried about that atm) so I'll have to take it to a 'Good Ol' Boy shop' to get the inspection done later in the year.

How did those with aftermarket Y pipe get passed this?

Thanks!

Your best bet would be to find someone from the ORG around you. I had a good friend of mine install mine.

As far as emissions are concerned, just make sure that it's warmed up. I just got mine done recently after a 30 minute drive and passed no problem. Only thing I would be concerned about is if they had a visual check and knew that the Y-pipe was missing two pre-cats.

Anyone around Springfield, Missouri? LOL Have yet to see anyone in my local area - unfourtunatlly! I even have my stickers Maxima.Org to try and encourage others to join! lol

Yes, they do a visual inspection and the shops that will not install it are the ones that would do the inspection. Hence the need to find a good ol' boy round here when the time comes for that. For some of the shops (inspection shops) they will not raise the car to look under it, some do. I have an idea of who to take it to for the inspection, but I don't want them touching my car otherwise. Not only are they costly, but (and I mean no offense here to anyone) there are a lot of trained monkeys around there and all they can do is R+R parts. Maybe that's not a bad thing afterall.

I went to get my y-pipe installed today and the ******* mechanics wouldn't remove the 2 pre-cats to put in the new pipe. And then he *****ed about how it would look bad for his company if somebody found out he installed it on the car, he claims its very illegal. HOW GOD DAMN REDICULOUS IS THIS??

And I already tried installing it myself, jackstands were lookin' a bit bent so I wussied out....cuz dying wasn't on the agenda for the day.

Any .org members around Seattle? I got 60 bucks for someone to do it.....

lol @ "cause dying wasn't on the agenda today".

Jim, no speed shops in your area? I'm sure they'd be able to help you.

But yeah, it's not that big of a job if you can get the tools somewhere.

8 nuts to take off (3 for each pipe inlet and 2 for the flange connecting to the converter). Oh and 2 O2 sensors to unscrew.

LMAO!!!!! Yea, not a good thing to have on anyones agenda!

It's just cold as ice out there right now and I don't feel like freezin my butt off if I didn't have to. Not to mention, I've been very buys lately, so maybe this can wait - till I'm not busy and it's warmer out. The speed shop is the place I took it to, ironically. I'll get it done, eventually. hehehe

Pfftttt ..... pre-cats, cats ... who needs em anyway?

Wow. You'd think a speed shop would be a little more lenient since they probably get a lot of customers with aftermarket parts.

Maybe you rubbed them the wrong way by breathing in their presence? lol

Removing the pre cats are very illegal. The same penalty as if they were to install a test pipe. I don't think that it is worth it for a shop owner to do.

That being said, I am in the process of removing mine so I'm in no way against this. I just don't think that any shop owner is foolish enough to do this for someone that they don't personally know.

My mechanic would do it no problem. But then again i eat dinner with him, his family, the owner and his family too. Isn there some welding needed for the tha y-pipe hanger?

sorry to butt in...

I was wondering about the y pipe install.
Like does it cause you to lose torque? and alot of low end power?
Im kind of in the same boat as this person. I have a personal mechanic but i wouldnt know what to tell him to do.lol.

Sorry if im thread jacking or what not.....just cant open my own thread yet.

Mmax99:
- IMO you may lose maybe a few horses in the idle -2000 rpm but come 3000-5500, major difference in pull.I think with the y and test pipe you get about 20 hp more than stock..So yea it does more your torque curve, But i love it.

cashoit:
- yea a very small amount of welding is needed..the hanger that the collector end area sits on, that needs to be welded to the bottom of the y pipe.Well at least that how it was when I got it so..I did the same thing for the new y pipe.

My warpspeed y pipe came with a bolt on hanger that requires no welding. I guess that they differ.

I would recommend not having it installed via jack stands. Because when I did mine of a professional car lift at my cousins shop, we were installing it when the one of the two studs going to the Cat snapped, and we had to drill em out, and that would have sucked if we were on the ground. You can use ur stock hanger, it looks more OEM like, and not aftermarket. Just my $0.02 tho, its ur car, do as you feel is good.

I know for sure that the 99 cali spec maximas and i30s have 2 precats that the others don't. If you only have 1 catalytic converter, anyone can and will change out your y pipe.

I'll get it done tomorrow - will just do it myself. My only concern is having to drill out broken bolts (oh what fun!). I have a set of ramps and even if it takes all day, I'll get it done.

Thanks for all the posts and advice. Think I'll keep the OEM 'Y' just incase I have to put it back on for inspection time. Although, it will sit in my shed taking up space and I'll never need it - ya know, Murphy's law! lol

A torch does wonders to get the bolts and 02 sensor off, just make sure you wear long sleeves and goggles. You shouldn't need to use an impact.

Would be nice if I had a torch, but I don't. This would have been done by now if I did.

I got a propane torch at home depot for only $10. IF PB blaster won't loosen it then try the torch. It's loosened many of seized bolts for me: caliper torque; lower control arms; oxygen sensor

When installing new struts and springs next weekend I might need to use it again. The front struts bottom nuts & bolts require a lot of torque.
