Does anybody have a rattly muffler heat shield?

As I'm driving down the road, I usually have my rear pass thru open to let the sound of the woofers through in my car. Unfortunately, it seems there is a rattling sound in the trunk. The sound sounds like metal banging against metal. I checked this out all around, removed the jack and the tools from the compartments, made sure nothing was in the spare tire well, and checked around for pieces that could make such a noise. After bangin around seeing what was loose I determined most the noise is coming from the muffler heat shield thats under neath the car. I tried many times to bend the shield so it wouldnt make noise but eventually the noise would just come right back. I'm planning to spray expanding foam between it and the body of the car to see if that quiets the rattles. Anybody else have a rattly heat shield?

When does those "rattling" occur? At part throttle? All the time? A certain rpm?

Woops... sorry for being not specific on that. The rattling happens when I'm going down the road over bumps. The worse the bump, the worse the rattling is. It is not throttle dependent nor RPM dependent and usually not speed dependent either.

I would try jacking the car up on stands and going under and shake and wiggle the whole exhaust and see if theres any metal contact anywhere. Also try tightening every bolt you see just to make shure nothing is comming loose. since you said it was in the rear, try removing the trunk liner and check if the reat strut mounts are tighened because those might come loose and start chattering against the cars body.

what I have found is that my rear seat makes noises as I go through rough roads. It has something to do with the metal brackets behind the seats hitting against the metal wall that seperates the cabon from the trunk.

Heat shields tend to vibrate.

But if its caused by bumps, could be a loose hanger, or something more along those lines.

I had the same problem. Its a thin piece of metal between the exhaust and something else, and it almost directly below the rear seats, right? well i sprayed the triple expanding foam in between there and i no longer have any noise. The only time i heard it was when the bass was up.

Is this safe? I have foam at the house that reads "Keep away from heat". Not sure if that still applies after it dries though.

My heat shield rattled when the bass it every time so I just took it off all together. Solved that problem.
