Nasty, metallic clanking from rear - goes away when brakes applied.

I've had this problem since I had four new tires put on when I bought the car in winter of 2008. At low speeds over most pavement surfaces (anything except glass-smooth) a clanking can be heard from the back of the car. I had no clue what it was for quite some time, but recently I discovered that if any brake pressure is applied, all the commotion stops. Any idea what this is? I assume it's related to the brake calipers. A google search said something about a missing "anti-rattle spring" being the culprit. Any ideas guys?

I brought it back there before I realized that the noise went away when the brakes were applied. They ended up shortening the mounting screws on my rear license plate, installing new wiper blades and charging me $40. Nonsense.

I thought I'd reply to say that my 3-year-long saga is finally over.

The rear brake clips needed to be replaced. That's it. A 5 minute, $30 fix. My Maxima no longer sounds like a frontier-era chuckwagon rattling into town when I drive around.

I have been watching this post, and I thank you for the fix advice.
I will be fixing mine soon, but I got used to sounding a little like an army tank
rolling down the road.

Yeah, the rear brake pads had plenty of life but had crystallized and were hard as a rock. This explained the metal-to-metal sound I heard.
