Changed the oil about 2000 miles ago / 8 months ago.
Seen NYC winter/summer/fall and now starting spring.
Changed the old one with Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic. should i change it now or wait? its really really dark and when i check the stick it has super dark lines?

honestly, with synthetic oil, u can change it every 5k miles, "driving like u stole it" = 4k miles, but the more u change ur oil, the better, if u got money like that, but for me, when u use synthetic i jus change it every 4k miles weather i "drive it like i stole it" or not. and i hit over 100mph atleast 4 times a week. haha
Definitely change it. Stop and go driving and doing all those cold-weather starts and short hops shorten the effective life of oil. Cheap insurance imo.
On a related note - does anybody use heavier oil in the summer (10w30 or 10w40) or do you just stay with 5w30 year-round?

I'd say to stay synthetic. I want to change mine to synthetic but I'm not sure if I should seeing as it has about 180,000 on normal. I've only used 5w-30 oil, but my friends dad who is a really good backyard mechanic says I should use 10w-40. I've always found that odd because everyone on here seems to use 5w-30. I wonder what some other people will say?

i use 10w-30 amsoil, after i changed oil brands and weights my car rev'ed faster and idled 100 lower. i have no idea why but i saw the number avg lower on idles on my digital rpm switch and it rev'ed faster when i hit it.
old oil was 5w-30 mobil 1 changed at 4k, filter was not changed,
also less oil was burnt exponentially after 3 oil change intervals, went from 1qt every 1000 to about 1qt ever 3k.

Hey first off a synthetic oil is somthing u can love or hate! synthetic oil is great bc it does give u extra protection and will give u some extra miles between oil changes. if u change your oil with synthetic as often as u would with reg oil your wasting your money so stretch it a bit. from what u said it sounds like a def time for oil change, so now for the good part...what oil? Mobile 1 is great BUT whats your type of driving? If u drive your car hard u should fork up the extra couple bucks and do your engine some good bye going to royal purple and enjoy it.
i love royal and will allways use it!
NOW your climate is the final factor...
use a 10 weight
15 is to hard to warm up in cold conditions

If u change the oil and filter regularly then u dont have to worry about sludge build-up as much, if u are goin to run conventional motor oil. Synthetic is good cuz it doesnt have additivites that can cause sludge buildup like conventional oil does. Again, if u are changing the oil regularly then u dont need to use synthetic. But synthethic is def better
4-5 quarts i believe

Now that's complete BS.

OP, why do most of your thread titles have "FAST" in it? Think your special??
This is far from an emergency.
You need 4.25qts for an complete oil change and filter. How about RTFM or search.

Change it.
At 145K your wasting your $$ on synthetic oil.
Go to Wally World and pick up Castrol GTX 10-30 and a cheap filter.
Continue to drive it like you stole it.
Being able to take your girl out on the $$$ you saved, PRICELESS!

Couldn't agree more. I've been using valvoline high mileage 5w-30 and the standard grade purolator filter since my car had 110,000 miles on it. I now have 230,000 and have had no problems.
changed oil every 3000 miles or as close to it as possible. Always takes 4 and a little over a half quarts and always gives me just under 4 quarts out 3000 miles later. (slight valve cover leaks)
These engines are bulletproof as far as daily road driving goes. Don't stress over the oil change.
can i start using synthetic
I just got me a Infiniti i30 and i wanna kno if i should start using synthetic oil so the car would last longer... It has about 180000 Miles and its just stock Any Help ? Thanks New to Maxima.org
if you are doing city driving then I would change the oil but get the regular stuff. My car has about 200k and i have been using the regular oil since i got the car @ 47k miles. I also use the regular gas without any problem. The car will run fine. If you are into racing your car then use the synthetic oil and premium gas.
agreed.
OP,
If you want, u can run with sythetic. Its the cleanest oil u can buy and wont leave any sludge deposits. But its only economoical if u changing it every 5k or more like the oil manufactuerer suggests. Synthetic breaks down so much slower than conventional motor oil. If u changing every 3-4k miles then u might as well run conventional oil. Again, conventional oil wont leave any sludge or break down if u change it every 3k miles.
agreed.

I would only consider changing from dino to synthetic oil at 180k if I ran two trials of auto-rx through the crankcase first. See www.auto-rx.com
Barring that, I would just stick with Castrol GTX 5w-30 and a decent oil filter and I don't mean Fram.

Running synthetic in my '98 since about 80k, it has 149k, no oil burning, and it stays clean , typically 5-6k per change (twice a year). On the other hand my Volvo 850 gets dirtier , it adapted to synthetic recently , but it's mostly a road warrior, higher mile trips.
I know you all 've been talking about this a few days, but I just wanted to add this info. I found these sites a few years ago on the org and thought they should be added here. Lots of good info, especially on the 'Ferrari site.
Enjoy !!
