What's up with this?

When I have my car at WOT I see a short puff of smoke coming from the exhaust between 4k and 5k RPM. Could this be because I am due for my 60k mile service? And this is the first time I have ever noticed this.
Help!!
tED
BTW its a 97 SE with 62K.

Time for a compression check

Get it done or do it yourself, if you have a compression test gauge. It may reveal if you have a problem with one or more of the cylinders.

If the smoke isn't blue in color (oil burning) then it's probably just excessive carbon being blown out. I can get some "dirty" exaust from mine if I go WOT in the first 5 - 10 min or driving.

Do your 60K tune up, run some Techron fuel injector cleaner through it and see if you get a cleaner burn.
