I haven't replaced my filter since I bought the car. Someone should pull they're rear seat and check for noise. Fastcarny, would you check your regulator with that stethoscope please.
Something is setting up a harmonic sound wave, and I suspect the filter is amplifying it.
Ill pull my rear seat if the rain lets up here.

DRONING NOISE

Checked fuel PUMP today and fuel press reg--BOTH NOT making the noise i hear in the fuel filter.. Pressure reg makes a slight clicking noise (which is normal) and fuel pump has slight hiss sound hardly hear it with the scope.. The FUEL FILTER HAS A LOUD DRONING sound---totally unreal!!! ONLY WHEN ITS COLD OUTSIDE!!

I GIVE UP! I took the fuel filter OFF the fire wall and NO longer hear any droning sound at all--INSIDE THE CAR! S T R A N G E ! ! ! ! ! !

After I verify that my filter is making the noise, I'll replace the filter, then regulator, and then pump. Order of cheap/easy to expensive/PITA.
It's possible the filter is plugged and building a pressure head, causing us to hear the pulses from the pump as a high frequency drone. Seems like if it was that plugged we'd have drive-ability issues though.

I don't think you have to give up, you found the source of the audible noise. Hell you could isolate the pump mount on rubber stand-offs and wrap the filter in sound deadening foam, and not worry about the cause.

When I have time and money I'll worry about finding the root cause.

Maybe the screen on the fuel pump is no good??? I mean, how else would something get to the fuel filter?? Just my 2 cents..

I am sad to say that I has jump on board this thread late in the game, however I have the exact same sound in my car......
At first I figured it had someting to do with my rad core support being rotted away. I figured that it changed the position of the engine a bit, and something was rubbing. I also have the sound in the summer and winter. This summer the core support was replaced, and it is still there.
As to the gas filter idea? Well it is in the area where we hear the noise? What model/brand gas filter are you guys using? I read on this forum to run a gas filter from the dealer for a 300ZX, as it is a larger filter. I have been using that size filter for a while. Is anyone using a Z filter? If so perhaps that filter is too large for the bracket and it is rubbing on something?
This problem is driving me crazy!

Has anyone pulled the filter from the bracket while the noise was present?

Re-read this post for your answer, I am satisfied that its been solved. I'll replace my filter when i get around to it and then my pump when it dies.

Droning Noise

Hey fellas, I have a 97 GXE with 181K on the odometer. I can't wait until it warms up outside so I can try a new fuel filter. The noise in ??? will make a preacher cuss !!! Thanks so much.

My 96 does it too. Looking at the FSM the fuel pump is on high speed for cold starts and a lower speed for cruise conditions. That is why it goes away!! Time to change the filter!

Changed my filter 2 weeks ago, no better, guess it's the regulator next.
How many have found that the answer? I only recall one saying that fixed it.

I screwed around trying to find that noise for a year or so. FPR change fixed it for me.

I've ignored the noise for a looonnngg time now. I've tried driving for a few days with the filter bracket removed.

And I can still hear the noise, which I assumed was because the filter was rubbing up against the firewall or something else was still causing it.

From what I can tell, the noise is way too fast and constant to be anything engine driven by the spinning engine.

Anyone have any other theories?

Problem located!?!?!?

Also, Whoops! Scratch that, by bracket I meant filter removed from bracket in the previous posts hahah

But anyways guys I have some good news I think I have found the source of our problems! And its not anything fancy it was a hose.

If you look at our fuel filter bracket with the filter removed you will see a place for one hose to be secured to, when I changed my filter I left all of those unhooked and thought for a while that changing the filter fixed the problem but when I decided to go back and clean up everything and resecure it back to their original places the noise came back.

So now I happy that its nothing like the crank pulley or something else going bad, but now I need to track down where that hose goes to and why is it vibrating so strong sometimes that it can be heard through our firewall. From what I can tell it is also a fuel hose that goes into the engine this time. But why its moving around so much has me confused.

LoL different problem altogether. This is continuously long (hours), after starting. For your problem you should search for starter re grease.

Sorry for reviving this, but I was curious if all of the guys here had fixed their problem.

So it seems like where we left off was at the fuel filter, and I have changed the filter plus removed the bracket and the problem is still there

Its seems like the FPR was suggested, but I dont know how to change or test that sucker.

Its funny, rereading my old posts I can see that I was freaking out a lot. But its been a year, maybe even a little over a year and nothing catastrophic has happened yet. The noise just keeps humming away.

I tried what you have suggested also but noise is still there. I was looking at the TSBs and there was one for the Brake Booster Check Valve causing the dashboard to make noise. Not sure how valid that is but maybe worth a try.

The filter is the source of the audible noise, but not the cause. Fuel pressure regulator is mounted on the rear fuel injector rail, and has been replaced by another, with positive results.

Ooo, I know what I am going to do this weekend then!

But it has been so long now, that I am pretty much used to that drone, haha. Would be kind of sad to see it go away, we've been through so much together.

Give us an update. Mine is still doing it, I'm really not too worried about the noise.

Holy sh!tballs, other people are having the exact same problem as me. My car is making the exact same sound as the one in the YT video. My car:

97 GLE, bone stock, AT, 128k miles, other then the tranny kicking a bit, it is in pristine shape. I need to go through maintenance records, but all the standard stuff has been done for the 60k/90k/120k services.

Like others in this thread, the sound started when the engine is cold and at idle, and over time it's gotten worse and worse. Where I'll hear the sound even when the engine is at operating temp on the freeway, etc. Any other updates other then the fuel filter? Has anyone changed their FPR of fuel pump?

Based off of this thread, I take the sound is mostly harmless and the car should be safe to drive?

Why don't you replace the fpr and let us know. I can't afford it right now, and am not too worried.

Sorry guys still haven't replaced my FPR yet

But I did make a video and managed to capture the sound. Although you might have to turn it up, and be careful because there are loud noises from me bumping my phone against the steering wheel. So if you are wearing head phones, just a heads up.

And the noise is getting worse for me, it doesn't go away anymore. And as the weather gets colder it gets worse. No codes, no performance issues, or problems. Yet.

In the video, you will see the dash.

And the part where everything goes black is when I put the phone down close to the brake pedal. Then I start pumping the brakes to see if it does anything, so that is the wheezing noise, haha

Has anyone tried changing fuel injectors/coils/plugs? This solved a lot of vibration/idle problems for me. Car runs amazing for 225k.

I have the same cabin droan and vibration in my 2009 (95,000 mile) I believe it's the CVT tranny and I DON'T think it's an easy fix.
pity, I loved my 2005 Maxima, this one is disappointing.

The droning noise referred to in this thread is due to a set of fuel pressure regulator hoses and/or the fpr itself. Well actually most of it is metal I believe. There is a thread here where someone investigated the noise and found the sound originating at a set of FPR hoses.
