AIRBAG (I need some help ASAP)

So I wrecked my 97 Max and both airbags deployed. Over the past 2-3 weeks I managed to get the car put back together now, but I'm stuck with questions about the airbag.

Yesterday I got the airbags and just plugged up the airbags and turned the car on the airbag light was still on, I did some research and found out that doing that might have messed up the control module.....so this morning I went back to the junkyard and both the control module and driver side clock spring from the same Max I got the airbags from and re-installed everything while the battery was disconnected this time.

So before I plug the battery back up I just wanted to make sure that I did not forget anything. A friend of mines is telling me that I need to change the airbag sensor located in front of the car but IDK where that is or what it looks like. Did the research and found nothing.

So should I plug the battery up and hope everything went okay or should I replace the sensor?!? If so, I need to know where it is located and what it looks like.

Please help me out. My car is done and I jus want to drive her again.

Before

After

How to reset airbag?

Open the driver's door. Note the rubber covered button located low on the B pillar, a button which is pressed by the door when the door is closed. This is the Driver's Door Switch (DDS).

Turn the ignition from OFF to ON. Press the DDS at least 5 times within 7 seconds after turning the ignition switch ON. Turn the ignition OFF. Close the driver's door. Start the engine.

If the airbag warning lamp is still on (or still flashing), there is a fault in the Supplemental Restraint System which must be diagnosed and repaired.

P.S. nice job on the repair

Ok, do you know what they look like because I changed my bumper and didn't see anything that looked like an airbag sensor while doing that....so I don't even know what it is that I need to buy.

There is no sensor in the bumper. The sensor is in the control module you already replaced. Reset the light and you'll be good.

If they are up there, there will be wires in a yellow sheath running to them and the sensors themselves will most likely be yellow

Ok now I am trying to follow what you did here. You replaced the two air bags and the computer under the handrest correct? Did you make sure the computer you got was not from a car in a front end accident? When I had my accident, I replaced both air bags and then got a computer off Ebay which was not in an accident. Didn't even need to disconnect the battery to replace the computer and after starting up, light was no longer there. Since you have a 97, did yours have air bags in the seats?? I an not sure which years had them but just want to get all the possibilities out there.

The computer came from the same Max I got the airbags from. That Max had an accident as well but it was a side swipe not in the front, I'll go back to the junk yard tomorrow and get a different one....might just put my old one in there and try to reset it and see what happens.

And no I don't have air bags in the seats....I think only the 98 and 99 come with that option.

Once the bags have been blown the computer/control module is no longer good. So don't go trying yours. As long as the control module was from a 96-97 or 98 without side airbags then you have the right module.
Repeat the reset procedure several times. It takes some finesse getting it right.

+1 on the computer control module being no good after collision as I have sent mine in to a company and they were unable to repair.

front end looks nice. did a great job.
i had to do the reset procedure on mine because of a defective side airbag.

also i notice on the the 4th gen i see no yellow tubing running in the front end at all.
when i had my 3rd gen yes and on the q45 i see yellow plastic tubing running and the sensor's.
you can't miss it.

i think everything is all under the armrest and center console on the 4th gen.

If you have switched the computer and the light is still flashing, I would verify the connections for the air bags with battery disconnected and attempt again. If it is still flashing, then you may have no other choice than to go to the dealership.

I noticed the FSM mentions that one of the four bolts (right, front) is for grounding and is different than the rest. I don't know how much to worry about this fact since I've never taken a close look at the system. They are also quite insistent that the bolts be replaced.
