Super easy. You already had the door panel apart, that's the most difficult part.
1. Remove vapor barrier.
2. Lower window enough to remove the two M8 screws (10mm socket would get them out).
3. Remove window from door (if you have vent visors, you can just tape the window up without removing the window from door).
4. Disconnect the power window motor from door harness.
5. Remove M8 screws that hold the motor to the door.
6. Remove M8 screws that hold the regulator to the door.

i had this same problem pretty much in my gle. except my window wouldnt stay up along with your problems. it turned out the bolt that holds the "up" wire in place came off and the wire was disconnected.
Check all your wiring and grounds, make sure there isn't a lose ground causing intermittent operation.
You could also remove only the motor, I wouldn't remove the regulator unless you absolutely have to as they are a total pita. Once you have the motor out, open it up. Inside you will see a messy combo of grease and the remains of old teflon bushings. clean out the mess, take yourself to autozone and in "help" section you will find a pack of 3 new teflon bushings. Put them back in spaced evenly and repack with bearing grease. voila, working window motor.

The regulator is extremely easy to remove. I removed mine in 10 minutes after the door panel and vapor barrier was removed.
The symptoms the OP mentions sounds like it is a mechanical problem, not an electrical one.

SAME issue with my drivers side door. I recently took this apart to fix my door lock, I will post pics later tonight. is it true that if you HEAR the motor working that its probably NOT the motor? Mine just does not stay up, it falls into the door frame, I put a piece of wood in there to keep the window up. This lead me to believe that it was my regulator which seems pretty intensive to remove. Ill photoshop my pictures to illustrate the question too. Maybe it will help original post.
I had the exact same problem on my I30 and my '92 pathfinder.
Both was the same problem, plastic clip in the regulator assembly that holds the window up.
Easy fix for both (fixed the plastic clip with a metal bracket).
If you take your regulator out of the door and take a look at it clearly, you can see how the unit supposed to operate properly and why it's not operating properly.
