I just read about 100 or so thread titles and threads about humming noises but none are like what I have or they went dead.

I have a 97 max with an auto. On a cold start I get this loud humming noise coming from under the hood. I t sounds like it is coming from the tranny and does it in drive neutral or reverse. This sound goes away when the car warms up as well. The transmission fluid is clean, not burnt, and up to the proper level. This transmission also leaks no fluid.

That being said I have not had a chance to bust out a stethoscope yet so this sound may not be coming from the tranny. It just sounds like it is coming from the D/S of the engine bay. This car has one code for the VSS but it is not the sensor but the guage cluster.

Any help finding this problem would be great. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: It makes this sound at idle and while backing out of my driveway. It is not a brake,bearing,axle,scalloped tire noise.

Thanks for the reply but I dont think we have the same problem. All of my maximas have done what you are describing (I think) and it happens when the engine fan kicks on. I still have the sound if anybody has any input. There is no way I am the only one with this sound.
