There's only a few of brands, felpro and McCord being the most predominant. I found the best deal from Schucks, they were Felpro. I've always preferred Felpro FWIW.

I used to sell auto parts retail in a shop frequented by a lot of neighborhood mechanics. When they were fixing someone else's car, they saved money and bought the cheap gaskets. When they were fixing THEIR car, they used Fel-pro. That said it all to me.

I just replaced front and rear valve cover gaskets on my 98 Max.

You need to place RTV in the two corners of each head. See the FSM for a better explanation and picture.

I bought OEM gaskets recently and don't remember them being too expensive. Let us know how much you paid vs. OEM.

Felpro from schucks/kragen was $50, jump on that if shipping is reasonable.

OEM is best. Otherwise use felpro, thats what I used. For sealant use rtv ultra gray, its the best.

Felpro is good, use Permatex Ultra Black. Smear a light coat and stick the gasket on top then tighten the cover on. Important to put some near the cam journals, that area could leak.

Well in one of those many threads several people mentioned getting the head gasket kit off e-bay. Not sure of the manufacturer but for $15 more than just the VCs, you get the HGs, VCs, TB, IM, IACV and EGR which the IM would have to be re-used anyway. Plus you'll have a set of head gaskets setting around if you need them. Several people said they used them with no problems. I can understand wanting to use good parts for extra peace of mind but on a VC unless you torque it wrong or it's just a sh*t gasket it's going to do it's job for at least a few years. Not sure how long you plan to stretch your Max but plan on keeping mine for a while and I see fit to order the HG kit as my next repair.
