Transmission problems: P0734

Well, My gf comes home from work and tells me that the car will not shift out of 1st gear!! ohhh boy! SO the whole time we have owned the car(8 mo ago), the transmission has started slipping more and more. I'm not sure if something is going bad...or if its the suspect broken rear main seal leaking oil where it shouldn't be. But now that its stuck I check the codes and autozone found p0734. Is this a bad solenoid? I did some googling but not mainly people posting their fix. The tranny fuild level is good, and does not show any red flags that caught my eye.

Any help would be appreciated! I did try putting it in 2..And to me, it almost feels like it has 1st and 2nd. but thats it. I'm not sure tho, hard to tell...

google search brought this up

Improper 4th gear shifting or torque converter clutch operation. It's a trans code.

The code P0734 says that it is a 4th gear problem. There are similiar codes for the other gears - P0731 for 1st gear, P0732 for 2nd gear and P0733 for 3rd gear. However, all the codes reference parts inside of the transmission. So are you comfortable taking the auto trans apart? Many of the solenoids that could give you this problem are all part of one big assembly and it ain't cheap - $700 - $800 IIRC.

Take it to SEVERAL tranny shops and have them diagnose it. If decide to have a shop fix it, just don't have it done by AAMCO unless you like taking it back time after time after time.

Jeez...so its internal, I am comfortable performing most tune ups/simple part swaps..but an Automatic tranny...ehhh..don't really have the proper tools for that. Sucks this part is internal. DAMN...so this is the end eh?

Well, the car has a rear main seal thats bad...it leaks oil at a decent rate. It does its job of getting the woman to and from work. But the tranny has always been slipping. Where can you find a tranny for that price? I've never even tackled an auto trans before...Maybe if I gave it a try I could do it. As long as I have instructions/google I can usually do it..Its just the instructions need to be good! Any help appreciated!

Junk yard. These trannys are tanks, but Nissan has a TSB posted for the Shift Solenoids. Replace those when you get a new tranny. 80 Bucks for the updated ones IIRC?

I read on another post somewhere that these sensors were on the outside..the cars tranny works, its shifts into reverse just fine..neutral, and 1st. Just won't get out of it. I guess i need to spend some GOOGLE time and look into these sensors, but i hate shooting in the dark..Any help/input with experience would be appreciated!

I had the same code and the same slipping issues. Bought used one for $250, did a lot of the work myself - paid a mechanic friend to help me do the actual swap and hook it back up. I stripped everthing off, then he cme over and we swapped them and made it run in two hours. Where I live you can get on Craigslist and a lot of people advertise install a used one for $700 - $900 for you, including the used trans. Without my friend I may have gone that route.

Humm..Well I am mechanically inclined, I just know taking out a tranny involves quite a bit and not having an overhead lift would be a pain. No tranny jack or nothing. I leave town for a month in 5 days, looks like this will be hanging out for a while. Maybe i should post on craigslist..haha

Everytime I see the engine light, I have the code pulled out from autozone, reset it, drive it for a while, and pull the code again if the light goes one again.

I would recommend a tranny manual from ATSG. It is easy to rebuild an auto transaxle if you have a good idea how they work. Anyway, what's your transmission's model? Slipping can be caused by worn clutch plates and bands (if applicable), damaged seals, worn out gears, malfunctioning shifting solenoid, and leaking pistons.

I just replaced the solenoids in my 96's tranny. I wasn't getting any codes, but I was getting late shifting out of first (which the solenoids fixed). It's not particularly hard, but you'll be lying on your back for while to get them in and out, and it's messy. It would have been a 2-3 hour job if I hadn't have made a couple of dumb mistakes.

The solenoid kit was only $90 from Courtesy. I think Nissan recognized that they screwed up, and offer it as an apology. They didn't do a recall, but a TSB aimed at tranny rebuilders. You need to order it by the part number, otherwise you won't find it on the website. It's in this thread: http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...noid-help.html. This describes the process: http://maxima.theowensfamily.com/tsb/NTB98-049d.pdf. This was helpful too: http://www.vqpower.com/v2/articles.php?article_id=60.

To be clear, I have no idea if the solenoids will fix your problem. But replacing them isn't that big a deal.
