egr code saga

whats up.
on my dad's 97 maxima he keeps getting an egr code...p0400.
Egr flow malfunction. The valve did have a leak so we replaced it.
cleaned out the ports.

here's what I've noticed.
when you press on the diaphragm or apply vacuum to open the valve...the engine doesn't hesitate or cut off.

but on my 94 SE when you do either one it cuts off.

on the 97 i checked the egr solenoid.
it works.
the ecu is sending voltage to the unit.

now when you hold the rpm's between 2-3k rpm's the valve opens then closes.
it doesn't remain open.

i haven't tried the same thing on my max or the i30.

but before i do i was hoping if anyone had any suggestions?

Did you clean out the small tube that goes from the EGR up to the back of the intake manifold just behind the throttle body? Did you take the IACV valve off and clean up all the gunk that blocks the EGR port within the intake manifold?

I just finished fixing this issue on my 99. Most of the gunk was at the top of the small pipe and inside the intake manifold, blocking the port. You've got to get behind the IACV to clean that up.

Yup, your still clogged up. Remove the IACV and look inside the intake. The EGR port is actually on the bottom (follow the tube) and it gets completely blocked up.

I just replaced my cat last week and I didn't check my codes before doing it. After I went to clear the 02 code and I noticed its giving me the EGR Flow Malfunction code. Anyone know if replacing the Cat would have anything to do with this?
