stick or auto (both of you)? what are your other mods? If you're stick and he's auto I would say it'll be close with you on top. auto to auto it's a tossup. you can guess what happens if you are auto and he's manual and knows how to drive.

Is his Grand AM a V6? What model is it? How many exhaust tips???? I think the double exhaust with 2 tips on each side is for the GT's, they got like 170 hp. But they are slow. you'll beat him regardless of the model...

Pontiac's continously have the worst crash test ratings, cheep interiors, cheep engine builds, ect. ....Dude, even comparing a friggen dae-woo to any pontiac would be an embarrassment to them!

I edited my post Motor Trend also tested the '95 Maxima's at 7.3 0-60. Obviously the '99's are slower but just wanted to point that out.

I just doubled checked... I found 7.7 I also found a Supercharged GrandAm
http://www.motortrend.com/feb00/pont...ntiacga_f.html

0-60 in 5.9 for a 5spd and 6.6 for the auto... too bad they dont make it

And 5.9 for a supercharged auto max and very low 5's for the manual maxima.

Haha I just looked up that supercharged grand am they tested: 262hp and 289 ft-lb tq. They did 0-60 in 5.9 and 1/4mile in 14.9 at 91.2... those numbers are so weak for a car with that much power. God GM family cars suck.

Dude, how the hell is that weak? Motor Trend tested a 260HP CL Type S and it did 6.4! Also, 5.9 0-60 is faster than a 2nd Gen MR2 Turbo or a Porsche 928 (that's a V-8 RWD sports car right there), faster than a 2nd Gen RX7 Turbo...
Admittedly, the 1/4 Mi. is a little slow (should be nearer 14.5 or something), but this car is obviously quick off the line.

How is it weak? The car has 70 more HP than me and 80 ft-lb more torque and I'd destroy it. 91.2mph trap speed? WTF? Stock auto maximas trap damn near that high. Thats how.

Here is my opinion:

My Dad owned an Oldsmobile Delta 98 back in 1986. Within 2 years it had MAJOR electrical problems, and the starter, ignition, and distributor all blew up.

I myself owned a '92 Camaro Z28 25th Ann. Edition.

This is what problems it had from the time I owned it, 1995-2000

4 Engines in 5 years
6 Starters in 5 years
3 heater Cores
2 Distributors
4 Distributor Caps
1 Steering Knuckle

And here is the reason I bought a Maxima:

I was trying to choose between the Accord and a Maxima. I knew the numbers on the Maxima for pure performance were somewhat better, but i wanted a REALLY reliable car after dealing with the Chevy. I called a friend who owned a 1995 Accord. he said the car ran really well, but he had to have the Fuel Pump replaced and the Tranny replaced only 1 year after he purchased it. He got both things fixed under warranty.

I called a buddy who had a '96 5-speed SE. I asked him the same question. he had 40,000 more miles on his car, as the Accord guy didn't drive much and this guy does sales, and drives 25+k per year.

He said: Well, I once took a corner so hard the water spilled out of my battery. Does that count as a problem? I said with a laugh "no, what else" he said nothing. He NEVER has had (and to this day has not had with 100k+ miles) a problem.

I've had my '97 GXE for a year and a half now and had no issues.

Faster, more reliable, more stylish. Take your pick, buddy.

Ever notice how all Pontiacs have the same buttons in the interiors?

GTP's are fast and theres a heavily modded local that i hear can roast em from a highway roll but thats about all they are.

Also, some of the Grand Prixs do come in stick as far as i know.

You will waste him with no problems at all. Let him get the jump just to rub it in more.

4cyl Grand Ams are available with stick the 2.4 is a noisy engine but a relatively capable engine, in the Sunfire/Cavalier it'll scoot em to 0-60 in 7.9 hehe
now the post about the reliability of GM cars? ok older ones yes... but I've driven Malibus, had GTPs for monthes, and my sister owns a Cavalier... my sister hasnt had ONE problem with her '99 Cavalier thats more than I can say about my Maxima... and the quality of materials? My fckn 4th gen has her beat oh yea baby... by an inch. The '99 Malibu? great car for the money and only had one problem with it- a stuck power window switch... the GTP? no problems none... yes it is a 2000 so we'll see in the future
oh yea... the Grand Am I drove had better steering than my Maxima

5.9 for an SC 260hp G/A? who can say crap about that? maybe the car is not as nice as ours but hell thats pretty damn good, I'm sure they could do better, but with 260 SC FWD hp, I'm pretty sure launching it would be a little bit harder than with the Maxima

and 160mph speedo? my Max has a 140 but its supposed to be limited to 115 or something around there, the G/A just is limited to 110

now for being a 'crappy' American sedan... 0-60 in 7.7 stock isnt so bad... and for thousands and thousands cheaper its not bad at all... I cant wait for the kill story where a Chevy Malibu beats a Maxima... It feels stronger than our Max off the line and I know it can atleast pull high 7 second 0-60s... not far off the auto max

but i guess they're just crappy American cars... dude screw my 240 project I'mma buy me a Malibu or a G/A and give it some bolt ons and go hunting Maximas

I have to admit I don't know jack about the newer cars, but my Camaro ran fine for 2 years before it started choking, so only time will tell.

Besides, my Max was assembled in NJ, and Chevy's are assembled in Mexico....don't ya just LOVe NAFTA?
