Service engine light keeps reappearing

Service engine light keeps reappearing

Just after doing a TB and MAF cleanup, suddenly the service engine engine keeps reappearing, even after the diagnostic 0505 indicates all clear.

After clearing the code, the service engine light comes back.

Any ideas?

you need to go get it scanned with one of those diagnostic scanners. If your lucky, Autozone in your area can still do it for you for free. This happened to me where the 0505 code kept coming up. I finally got it scanned and it turned out to be an 02 sensor that was intermittently failing....

had a scan done by one of those hand held devices, showed nothing.

Autozone, I'm passing though the US next week, has a real scanner, not hand-held?

The autozone scanner is still a handheld Actron or similar.

If I am not mistaken, the oxygen sensors are the only thing that can cause the MIL to come on and off.

I changed the bottom oxygen sensor near the catalytic converter last year, so its the upstream left and right in the engien compartment?

Interesting that all this started just after I cleaned the throttle and MAF. Maybe a vacuum leak, there is a little bit of idle.

Only the dealer can really do a proper scan?

Not true. Go to advanced/autozone, their scanner may pick up something that another handheld does not.

Then call around to local shops. Ask if anyone has a Modus, Verus, or any other computer based scan tool. They're more comprehensive in their coverage.

I have an evap leak somewhere and that triggers my MIL to come on. Sometimes it turns on, other times it stays off. when i turn the screw on the ecm to read the code, nothing comes up. when i use a code reader, the code that is stored is for an evap circuit fault.

not sure why it is happening but my evap leak causes my MIL to come on and off.

The turning of the screw method, from what I know, reads active DTCs. It wont read stored codes, which is why you got nothing until using the scanner.

Not sure why it causes the MIL to turn on and off, guess I was wrong.

I am unable to find advanced/autozone shops.

You have a website?

Might try Carquest and see what they can do. Not sure if any of the other auto parts places up there in Ontario have the free services like in the states.

I'll be passing thru the US, east of Buffalo, this long weekend, so any free non hand held computer scans are welcome.

I hope the car should hold out, a likely O2 sensor can wait.

UIM or LIM leak will also do this, and it can give several different codes. Most likely, the code you'll get will be 0174 or 0175 (oxy sensor). I've been having this issue for a LONG time now and my mpg's suck, but I'm not too worried about it and when I find the time, I'll do the IM gaskets.

I thought misfires would cause MIL to flash. IIRC

UIM or LIM leak?

Just remember, all this started just after I did a throttle body and MAF sensor clean. Pretty sure I reassembled evertyhing...

Did you replace the gasket for the TB? Any possible leaks from the vacuum hoses? Sometimes the end of the hose might look ok, but it can be split and causing a leak.

Yes the gasket was replaced, and just checked for any hose leaks. None

Good point.

Misfires will cause the MIL to flash, not for it to turn on and off intermittently.

On your way through the US, check Advanced Auto Parts or Autozone.

Did a another OBC check and a 13-02 code was returned.

Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) solenoid valve or circuit fault.

I will pick one up at Autozone for $80.

Does this require an immediate fix?

well I'm back from the states, had scans done at both Autozone and Advanced Auto. They look like Partsource up here only better.

Both were showing MAP sensor and EGR value flags.

But I informed the guy all this happens just after I do a TB clean.

He tells me don't change anything and look for vacuum leaks.

Sure enough, the air inlet duct small hose was not connected, it was instead connected to the inlet at the TB, who short hose was hidden behind all this.

I say this as this Britney (I did it again) moment can happen to you too.

P.S. Service engine soon light mysteriously disappeared.

Several different evap codes that point to different things. Would help if you post actual codes.

As in my case, DIY I forgot a key hose when reassembling. Hence a service engine code, this doesn't necessarily translate that that part is defective but saying something is out of wack.

Keep checking you got evertyhing back where its supposed to be.
