Where did you get the LEDs? Part #'s would help too.

Thanks,

to answer quickly

i bought the leds at kge.ca

It's King George Electronics... a local store in my area.
they're website is very new and you can't order anything from there yet.

The leds are 3Volts, at 1250mCd's each. Dang bright and good enough.

The LEDs are 5mm in size. The other green leds are supposedly 300mCd's i think? and 3mm at 3volts.

the leds get they're power from the small pins on the connector that plugs into the door circuit system.
the pins are towards the driver side the first pin and 3rd pin.

ie:

you have the big pins,
and the you have the smallindividual pins. 4 and 4
============= <-- big pins
----space---- <-- small pins.
==========^=^

hell yeah, it's terribly addicting I was lucky, my brother got me eight of the blue leds as an xmas gift hehe

i plan on putting some leds in where the door lock mechanism is. So people can see the door handle at night, instead of searching for it.

plus changing the lights for the stereo, climate control, adding a blue led to light up the base of the shifter area. ignition light if possible. the rest of my guage cluster also. Maybe adding some to the pillars (if i find it looks good and not tacky)... and the list goes on... hehe

Why did you have to cut the tip off little rubber cover that covers the LED, to make it brighter? Is it 5 for the drivers door and one each for the other 3 (8 total)?

To do the whole inside you would need 9 LED's. 2 for back, 1 for passenger side and 6 for the driver side.

The reason why i cut off the little piece of rubber is to be able to have the rubber piece fit back where it's supposed to go. Otherwise it would end up hanging on the LED, since the led is taller than the previous 3mm led. Plus it does make it brighter

did i write 8 somehwere? i might have since before doing the write-up i had done the passenger side first. hmm

No, I was trying to guess from the picture, thanks for the write-up. I may try this soon as I am going with the whole blue theme.

coolies, it does look pretty nice overall. I wish i had a digicam to take result pics. Looks pretty cool, you'll enjoy it.

It costs 3.50 for the leds over here... brings total to 31.50
plus 15% taxes for me... gives about 36$

A 36$ mod
which cost me about 5$ since i only bought
one led and got the others as a gift woot

Just for information. Most LEDS are polarized devices and won't work if you plug them in backwards. There should be some indication of which end is the anode and which is the cathode.

very true very very very true

it's important that the way you removed the previous led, is how you install the new led!!

in the led you will see a wire that goes straight up, while another goes up but turns towards the straight up wire, that turned wire which is "L" shaped, is the negative wire. The wire going straight up, is the positive.

when i did the leds, i made sure to put the new ones in the way the old ones were in

thanks for the comment, i will add it to my website next week, when i'm able to modify it hehe

org member Toolrocks has done this mod. it looks sweet! he may be able to give you some tips.

I have seen the ignition light done with a blue LED, but not the climate control. Do a search in the 4th gen forum, i think toolrocks has discussed some of his attempts to mod the gauge/climate controls on his 95 max.

climate area and stuff i will do a search on it now actually

already did my ignition light, ash tray light and some other custom lighting effects as well

I think too much blue LED could be overkill. Once i get my car painted and finish off the body kit im sure ill have no $$ for more lights, hehe

i've seen toolrocks' lock area mod and it looks sweet. however, it requires drilling so i'm not sure how that might appeal to someone if you were thinking about selling your car in the future. gl in your search!

I just made a writeup on doing the climate control the other day. It's a little tricky, cause it uses bulbs, and you're replacing them with LED's, but it can be done

Alright, i have one pic up... I took them at night... The camera isn't very good. But i managed to get one decent pic using the flash.
You can see the blue. I'll get more pics of it when it's just getting dark out. Should look better.

Glad you liked it With the LED's I used, it lights up all the buttons enough to be readable (except for maybe the up arrow, but that's plenty easy to find when you know where the down arrow is). That's why I put the note about using brighter LEDs, and I included the equations you need if you change the specs on the LEDs. As much as I think mine is dim and wish I had used brighter ones, I think if it were alot brighter, it could tend to be distracting.

looks pretty cool I'll probably use brighter leds if i was to do it.... you used 300mcd was it? stick 6k ones in there next time ;-) hehe

but really though, i'd probably use like 1k ones... or something a little bit lower.

Hmm what about using dual colored LED's? switch the color whenever you want kinda deal. I'm sure i've seen dual colored leds before. i think? hheh hmm...

Yep..I've got 300 mcd bulbs in there. You could always go higher and use the resistor to control the brightness...just limit the current. Right now, I've got about 26 mA on each LED. If i upped the resistance, they I could make it so they all got 15 and glowed even dimmer.

They do have dual-color LEDs, but none that have blue (as far as I know at least).

I also posted a new pic of my climate control at the end of the tutorial...lets you see all the buttons

Well, it took me a long time, but I was doing lots of experimenting and such. I would imaging that it shouldn't take any more than 3 hours once you have all the parts you need (probably less if you don't run into any snags and know what you're doing)
