Bought a Remanufactured Auto Tranny (facepalm)

Hey guys,

So I finally found a rebuilt i30 tranny. I should have known something smelled fishy when he said it was rebuilt, but with a non-locking diff. He said it was compatible and apparently was a retired mechanic.

Turns out....

I think it's a 3rd gen auto tranny. There was no hole for the crank sensor in the bell housing.

The shifting lever on the exterior of it looks just like the 3rd gen one.

ANYWAY, I got this mechanic from Thailand who really despises me right now, working on it.

We swapped that part of the bell housing that has the half moon cutout for the crank sensor with the old one, so it would go in.

He also said he had to get a new axle that would fit (I have no idea which one he bought. Broken English, and really really pissed at me).

I haven't told him that I think it's the REF402A, not the REF404A.

Two questions:

1) Who's got a bet on if this thing works.

2) If it does end up shifting (he had to modify that piece) will this thing even work with the TCM, engine, etc?

Any info or guesses would be good. If someone has a parade busting "No, dude, the internals are just going to shred" then so be it. I'd rather know ahead of time.

I don't think anyone has tried to do this before intentionally, so this is my best shot in the dark, fellas.

Cheers and thanks,

t

^^ COOOOOOAHL

now as for the backwards compatible question i wish i knew from experience but im sure you could "make" it fit but i think it would be a hassle now on the other hand i personally successfully swapped a 5th gen trans into my 4th gen i know you have time and money invested i your trans already but if you see a good deal i suggest that route the 5th gen trans is stronger
