Either the door is stuck, the actuator for the door isnt working, or the Climate control unit is busted.

There is a self diagnosis in the FSM. It starts on page HA-70 in the 1999 FSM. It has 5 sections that run in a row. Section 3 tests the duct doors. IIRC, one of the section takes a bit of time, so don't worry. Hopefully this will help.

If you need a FSM, download it here -

The doors inside the air ducts are controlled by electric motors that are powered directly by the climate control push buttons. There are 3 motors in total. The one that's not working for you is the "mode door motor". It could be the motor is bad or it could be that the control panel is bad.

What did the self diagnostics show you?

After you click on the link, you get a list of the different years that you can download a FSM. You click on 1999 (I believe that's what you have) and then you get a list of the different sections (or chapters) of the FSM. These are in the Adobe PDF format.

You can download all the files and save them on your hard drive or you can download only what you want. The file named fwd.pdf is the cover page or the index of the FSM and is the starting point to using the manusl. The file named IDX.pdf is the alphabetical cross reference.

For right now, all you need is the HA file, meaning Heating and Air Condition. After the file displays on your screen, you would click on the save button (3rd from the left) that looks like a floppy diskette.

you are going to have to look up under the dash from the driver's side footwell. Look at the white plastic box "thing" that is the air duct distribution box that sits above the ECU. You will see the motor attached to the side of this. It is a black, square thing that is about 3 inches across.

You can take the motor off and the flapper door inside should move freely. Your problem will be to get it to stay in the position you set it in.

The Blower motor?? Pull the glovebox out, look back there and it will look something like this (in the link below)...in this pic, the blower motor has already been removed but it goes where that big hole is. Don't know if thats what you are looking for though
http://home.earthlink.net/~pje112590...orlocation.jpg

EDIT: Heres what it will look like with the blower motor still in, just remove the entire glovebox to see this http://media.photobucket.com/image/9...a/IMG_0127.jpg

Now that you found the motor, turn the ignition switch on at look at it while you are pushing the different buttons on the control panel. The arm on the motor should move. If it doesn't, we are back to the earlier statement that either the motor or the control panel is bad.

Well I’m in the same boat same thing it works on defrost and not blowing Thur the vents so changing the motor is that hard ?

The motor is out in the open, so it is moderately easy. Just carefully observe the linkage and positions.

The grease could be seepage from the shaft? I don't know if you should try to interpret that as meaning bad.

I don't know for certain, but I think the motor is a Nissan only part. Nissan calls the motor "Actuator Assy-Mode." There are 2 different motors listed for the car and I think it is because of the control type.

The one listed for the GLE model which only had the auto HVAC controls is part number
27731-40U00 with a list price of $119.80

If you go on-line the part is about $85 but you will also have to pay for shipping. Some places rape you with shipping and service charges. Call your local dealer and ask for a price. Some dealers do discount. There is always the junkyard.

I have a 99 SE-L and this is the part I used: https://www.ebay.com/itm/NISSANINFIN...tZwhpW&vxp=mtr

Dennis was a BIG help with my same problem. I posted my thread exactly 2 years ago today. I refreshed it and it's right below this thread.

Here's my thread. Some helpful hints on the process in there: https://maxima.org/forums/4th-genera...ml#post9086190

I had the exact same issue on my 99 SEL that I'm trying to get back on the road. The diagnostic routine pointed to the mode door (Codes 31 - 36), so I ordered the mode door motor (or actuator) P/N 27731-2L900 and replaced it tonight. It was very easy. You only need to remove the two screws that hold the actuator to the bracket. All I needed was a short phillips head screwdriver and everything works again. The HVAC has been stuck on defrost for three years now!

yep I replace the resistor but no luck I figure o well it’s new so it is the motor trying to find a decent price or boneyard time

Just buy a new OEM one and be done with it for another 19 years.

Only time I'd buy a used one of these is if they weren't available new anymore. It's not stupid expensive either.
