Aftermarket Ignition Coils

Hey guys, what is the concensus on aftermarket ignition coils. I apparently bought too cheap on Ebay and the new one isn't drawing enough power so it sends a code to the ECU. Car is running fine but have been told I need to go to the dealership and get the coil if I want the CEL to turn off. What are your thoughts? I have used Autozone and Ebay coils before without issue. I regret that this last time I was in the mood for the cheapest as it is around Christmas and it has turned out to bite me.

I have an Autozone special in my car. Works great, took me a long time to find one that read the correct ohm's though...both NEW O'reilly's coil and AAP threw a CEL immediately. OEM is hands down a better choice but AZ (duralast) coils do work....

AZ coils set off a CEL a lot of times.

I had good results with them once you find a good set.

i had an ebay one that threw the code, i told the seller about it and he sent me a new one and it works like a charm. Its all about finding one util its just right it seems

I must disagree here guys some great aftermarket stuff for coil-on-plug ignition systems is out there. such as this here http://bigstuff3.com/products/ I dont know personally which coils are good because mine have never failed. knock on wood

When my friend bought his 99 I30, he had one bad coil. We went back to the dealer who let us take anything from this junked 96 maxima. I tested the coils and took one good one.

His I30 has been running great for 2 years now.

I bought a coil off rockauto and it set off a CEL, it worked fine otherwise, but I ended up buying a OEM one.

i had off the line power problems and hiccupping in drive at a stop,,replaced all my coils with hitachi ones,,now the max runs like new!!

Just had a similar issue..decided to go ahead and change my spark plus....dumb me got Bosch Platium 2 and then my car started to really act up. Went back to NGK and replaced with an OEM coil and she rides smooth. Well until today when I took a little road trip and now I'm getting nasty tranny noises.

got some from a junk yard 12 bucks and work great! I have had them in the car for over a year now and no mis-fire!

I installed Meyle coils 6 months ago for $45 each. So far so good, but not sure if they will last as long as the OE coils

Just purchased (1) ignition coil off Amazon for $30 shipped. I dont care if it throws a CEL, as long as it stops misfiring; i'll be happy.

Get OEM or used OEM .....alot of rides have problems with autozone or o reileys, especially with ignition coils....

Well the issue I had was a cylinder 4 misfire. I got a part off of ebay this is the second time I have purchased coils on ebay, I had purchased two a couple of years ago and those seem to be fine. I got the cylinder 4 misfire code along with a 1320. I told the seller, he sent me a new one. it got rid of the misfire code but not the 1320. I went ahead and purchased a OE part from the dealer @ $120. Still have the CEL and the 1320 code, no particular cylinder misfire. Called the dealer and they say I need to replace all six. I really don't want to spend $700 bucks on coils. I want to get the car ready to sell and just want the CEL to turn off. The car seems to run fine.

When I did my friend's I30, this is what I did;

use a voltmeter to measure all 6 coils. The one suspect one matched the CEL code. The 3 in the back measure the same or similar and the 3 in the front measure the same or similar. The one bad coil was in the front. When I found a used OEM one, I chekced all 3 used OEM fronts that i had available and took the one which had readings in the same area as the average of the 3 in the front on the car.

When you measure all 6, you might find that you need to replace more than one because of the readings you get.

Done.

I'd try replacing the sparkplugs first (NGK)...thats only like 20 or 30 bucks before I start dumping that kind of money on Coils. Of course the dealer is going to tell you that!

im having the same problem, have a misfire but the coil still works so idk what its problem is. OEM are like $120 arnt they?

misfire, but the coil works? Is it actually missing or is your CEL just on and telling you its missing? Try swapping the Coil for that cylinder to a different cylinder and watch to see if the code changes to the new cylinder or if stays.

If you do this you will need to reset your CEL after swapping or else the code will stay and not move/stay.

Have you replaced a coil recently with a parts store coil? Parts store coils (bwd, etc, etc) will throw a P1320 code.

I think what he's explaining is the engine is "hicupping" while in drive at a stop. I've grown in the towel and just buying the damn coils when I get my money. I've literally tried everything that could be associated with it, with no code present and the **** still keeps happening.


Pocketing OEM coil packs from the junkyard this next weekend... and if that doesn't work, just gonna take a plunge and buy eBay oem ones that are around 50-70 each iirc.

I paid around 90 for 5th gen coil (I have an 00vi swap) from courtesy Nissan. The aftermarket coil was 60. I cant pass inspection in MA with a check engine light.

beware Napa or oreillys

[

Both napa and oreilly tried to sell me "returned" coils as new - you could tell as there were scratches on the top surface bolt holddown holes.

Plus my mechanic auto shop got a napa too and it set off the cel, they went and got oem no prob in a year

Bad replacements

My OEM coils on my 2000 were failing, so I bought a 'Cheap' replacement set from Amazon.com The set I received were ProFire coils from Protech Automotive Products, LLC. They immediately set off the CEL, and, after only 6000 miles, they have started to fail. This company's phone is no longer in service, and they do not respond to messages on their website. They make their own leads (Made in America, sic*), but 'import' their coils.
They state their products are quality tested, with a 'Quality tested' sticker on it
At least the sticker hasn't fallen off yet....

I hope this sets an example to anyone trying to cheap out of coils. OEM is a must with ignition coils.
