can i use a non locking tranny in locking tranny car?
got 99 with i beleave a lsd tranny cause all my burnout are both tires never just one.
my question is is it ok to put a non lsd in will it work or does it make big difference and better run locking one?

Chances are you have a non-locking one in there anyways bro'. If both tires have near equal traction you will still spin two with an open dif. No 4th gen Maxima's came factory with a locking dif tranny unless your speedo is in Kilometers. 3-ways to tell- look at trans code on firewall, jack up front end and spin tire- watch direction of other tire, if it spins the opposite direction it's open dif or a cooked vlsd. Or simply look at the driverside axle to be sure.

Gotta disagree, I find open difs MUCH better in the snow because they don't want to go off the road with a little throttle, the vlsd is obviously much more likely to get you out if your stuck, but for actually driving in the snow I like open dif.

Kinda OT and hypothetical. I don't know which models come with what, and that's not my question. What I'm wondering is, would 5spd open diff tranny internals fit in a 5spd LSD transaxle? Say if I bought a bad LSD trans, and a good open diff trans, to build a low buck LSD tranny?

Thats a good question. Why you would want to do that is another question. Taking just a visual inspection...the axle seal on the drivers side of the LSD tranny case is much bigger that the open diff tranny. There might be small differences like that.

well i had a 15 inch spare on and a 20inch rim on other side and to do a burnout the 20 had to start loosing traction before the bald 15inch did. thats why i think mines lsd.
how can i tell if its lsd by vin number?

If your tranny code ends in V, you have a locking diff, if it ends in A, it is an open differential. I believe it is down on firewall on the VIN plate, passenger side.
