Everybody's favorite topic...Spending other peoples money!!
So I should be coming into some disposable income and since I am all but done with my audio(sad to say but it can only go so far and be practical) I am now moving on to the performance. Im probably going to start with the exhaust and this is what im thinking

At the moment I have a modified stock intake with AEM dryflow and high quality spark plugs, synthetic oil etc. The car is well taken care of since day 1 so Im essentially stock on the go end....MOST IMPORTANTLY< I STILL NEED TO BE ABLE TO PASS EMISSION TESTS ONCE A YEAR |

Buy a y-pipe first, you will see bigger gains opposed to a catback. |
but wouldnt it add to gains by completing the cat back as well or are most of the gains seen by deleting the pre cats?

Y-pipe is where you see most of your gain for the money. Then get yourself a nice catback to wrap it all up.

the same exhaust is on ebay for less than $200, dont do headers the gains are minimal, do a y-pipe thats the best bang for your buck

everything I read says ypipe as well first...that's what I will do if I get this 97 I'm interested in.....

The cattman y-pipe says its not recommended for use on public roads...I still need to pass emissions every year. Does this mean I can only do a cat-back and replace the exhaust headers because I have to keep the pre-cats?

well if I cant pass emissions then I wont be getting any y-pipe. Is this true? The Cattman website says not for use on public roads and highways meaning it wont pass emissions correct?

cattman only makes fed speck for later gens as per the website. I emailed him to ask to make sure. Looks like it will probably just be a cat back then. Maybe some headers but I dont know how they would fit up to the stock pre cats...

you can get a warpspeed ypipe which has the o2 sensor bung for around $290 i believe or go on ebay and get the same ypipe with pacesetter exhaust combo for around $550-$580.

OP says he has some money to burn, so why are you pushing him to get a y pipe? Having had both, I would not say that headers only provide minimal gains. You can pass emissions without precats. Just make sure the car is warmed up first. The precats are only used until the main cat is warmed up and working. |

Cattman swears by their fitment and I like to support a company that designs parts specifically for the maxima. Ill probably be going with the entire Cattman system. I just dont want to sound like a bee hive ya dig? I want the sound to be deep unlike the ricers driving around

Ok I decided to get the Cattman y-pipe and the Cattman muffler. Im not making serious HP yet so the cat back system doesn't make sense at this point. I've heard in order for the muffler to bolt up the 95-96 owners have to get a center pipe? Haven't heard back from Cattman yet so Im not sure just read it on another post here on the .org

I was given assurances that the warpspeed Y pipe would pass emissions. I ordered the heavy metal cat to deal with the exhaust/sniffing issue althought I only get the OBDII and no sniffer. After all I don't hate the environment. I have a 99 which is allegedly the worst one to have (4 O2 sensors all before the main cat). I am still waiting on delivery so I will be doing header back with a stillen cat back exhaust. Once I get it, I will report back and let you know how it went. The only other thing I need to order is a resonator. I have been told the stillen is a bit loud.

Its actually in great condition, no rust at all and the previous owner had painted it so no imperfections. Its a good product good luck with it, I'm actually unsure whether to keep mine or not since I'm going turbo but I may still keep it so I can go back N/A whenever I want.

1.) Headers are > than y-pipes for A32’s, gains and in the price world ever since newer, more affordable headers have been coming out. I too used to say the same thing about y-pipes> headers, but have since eaten my words, puked them out, here they are.
2.) Headers will gave a solid, repeatable 20fwhp over stock manifolds, this cannot be said for a y-pipe. So, if Maximum power is what you seek, get headers. If I knew then what I know now, I would have headers on my A32. 3.) The headers on my 03 VQ35 are for a VQ30, modified to fit a VQ35, so, with some slight modification, the opposite can be done (EGR bung on rear manifold is the only difference, I had to plug mine, you would add one, or find A32 headers that are affordable in your price range, and buy them). 4.) As has been seen in the past, if the vehicle is allowed to come up to operating temperature, there are pretty good odds, it will pass even with headers, as long as you have a cat (the main cat) in place. 5.) Stock 5th gen cat-back exhaust can support up to 250 fwhp, case in point, if you use your stock cat-back, and add a 5th gen muffler, it’s nearly identical. Depends on how much power you want. |

I'm even worse off since I had a 1st gen Stillen Y, scrapped it for a WSP. Those 2 purchases could have easily gone to headers and should have. Even more proof and how much I regret my decision and stand by my word. |
