Tach needle erratic movement

Hey, all!

Our i30 has just developed this symptom. The needle is smooth until about 2.5-3k rpm where it looks like it's fighting against something and looks like it's having a seizure. Don't think it moves much above that point. The tach readings don't really correspond with what the engine/trans are doing above 3-4k rpm.

Haven't taken anything apart yet. Any thoughts?

It could be that the gauge itself is going bad. Perhaps the pivot for the needle is messed up.

^^lol. does that mean a new cluster in the near future? i really don't want to be dialing in any needles if i were to just get the tach stuff from a jy, unless i'm over thinking this.

Lol alright man lemme be serious.

If you not experiencing any driveablity issues then the sensors for the tach are good.

IIRC the tach works off crank sensors (dont quote me on this). But if the tach works most of the time, then i would believe the sensor is good and the tach is physically broken in some way.

If this is the case, I would just pull another from the JY. Pull two of them in case one doesnt work. I always pull two if its not super difficult to remove.

EDIT:

You can do a new Tach but that gonna cost some paper!

The tach is bad. Get it from a used cluster and transfer it over to your current one.

Removing the cluster is fairly easy. Watch this video.

THey should be interchangeable. Jus might be different in color, but mounting and connectors should be the same.
