when it turns on it shuts off

Hello everyone,

in the morning when it is extremely cold, i go downstairs into my car and start it, as soon as I start it revs to 1,500 and then it just shuts off. Eventually after 10 seconds of holding the gas the car stays and it holds its idle. what can be the problem and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. this is my friends 1997 nissan maxima gxe the only mod it has is a high flow intake from stillen.

thank you,
D-sta

I had a similar problem - it was the engine coolant temperature sensor. There are two - this is not the one for the dash guage.

There are several people here that have either gone through or are going through that problem. I haven't come across too many people that have solved their 'hard to start' problem by replacing their ECTS, but that was also the first component that I checked on mine (96 GXE) and it ended up being within spec. Several people (including myself) have eliminated this problem by performing a throttle body cleaning and swear by its results. Anyways, check out this thread or do a search on 'hard to start'. Good Luck
