From where did "automagic" come?

someone please enlighten me: i've been working on cars since the mid '80's and have been posting to this board for 2-3 months and i've never heard of an auto transmission referred to as "automagic". why "automagic"? the automatic in my '95 is hardly "magical". in fact, if i could have found one at the time, i'd have gotten a 5-speed.

Yea but the transmission its talking about can be manually shifted using the tiptronic technology. I only wish our autos could do the same. The one mod I'll never have is a 5-speed. Wish I had known how much I'd want one when I bought my Max.

I definitely agree with the SuDZ, it's 5-speed envy, and I prefer autotragic (and yes mine is an autotragic - 96 GLE). If only I still had my 76 4-speed RWD Celica, the absolute best car to do burn outs in.

I think it's just slang...I doubt it came about for any reason.

And even auto"magic" Max's are still pretty darned quick. I have no regrets buying one, because I live in downtown Seattle, where it's darned hilly and traffic sucks.

I like my automatic transmission...
Not that I don't like sticks, just that I see nothing wrong with my auto.

I think the term was invented back in the 40's or 50's, when automatic transmission was considered magical.

It's fortunate that my motorcycle came with 6 speed.

it's called the automagic because when you put an auto-tranny on a maxima you can watch the HP to the wheels magically disappear

Re: From where did "automagic" come?

Thats because I made it up. Its a true story, it happened during a group dyno we had in houston back in 11-16-99. I was talking to Shing about how our auto's suck and magically lose like 10hp more than 5spds. However I just happened to combine the auto-magic without saying all the stuff in between that I meant to say . Shing and Jesse got a good laugh out of that one. Ever since then we've used the term automagic to describe us [<----Former automagic/slushbox driver] slushbox drivers. IIRC Emma and Hector both dynoed their bone stock 97 automagics and both had the same power/torque 147fwhp/156fwtq. Zprime had a stock 95 automagic and did 151fwhp/160fwtq. My 87 automagic put down a tree pulling 110fwhp/137fwtq . Given the fact that my engien was rated at 152hp/168tq at the flywheel and I had a generic intake the numbers were ok.

And its called stick because you are going to be beaten over the head with one for talking about automagics like that.

Yeah I remember...you did introduce the term "automagic" to this BBS. I still remember that dark gray/brown 2nd gen you had.

As for "autotragic" I forget who mentioned it first, but I think I may have the first to use it in my sig. And I really do have an autotragic...poor shift logic and not too smooth shifts even after Redline D4 ATF. Doesn't hold a candle to Toyota automatics.

The weird thing is that I can remember you saying how the camry had better shift logic than the maxima ever had. Another thing I find funny is that except for the 3rd gens (with the power, normal, comfort switch) my 2nd gen had the same shift logic as the 4th gens. I was kinda dissapointed to find the same 2nd gear bog at speeds around 5-15mph unless you push the pedal at least 1/2 down.
