Transmission problem

I have got a transmission problem, when I decelerate on the third gear tranny seems to be disengaging and RPM’s drop to 700. So engine breaking does not work on the third gear, it works fine on others and o/d. Shifting is OK.

So I’m not sure if the third gear kicks off or hydro transformer slipping.

Wonder if someone had this problem, oil level is OK

welcome to the ORG

your post was a little hard to understand.
first can i have some more info from you?

how many miles and what year is your max?
are you manually shifting?
im guessing its an auto due to "it works fine on others and o/d"
any trans services done?
what color is the fluid?

just a word of advice; ask these questions to yourself everytime you start a new thread it will help us out when giving you tips and advice

if its an auto and your manually shifting
STOP!!
it kills your tranny

Thats a long debated issues...okay to up****, not okay to down shift manually, unless you have a suprastick or a spare trans.

OP
get info and report back

I agree. Downshifting made me buy a trans

I think he has an auto because he stated the o/d.

Do you have a VE or a VG?

So you mean that when you brake (is that what you mean by decelerating?), you turn off the o/d to downshift to 3? Is it only in downshifting to 3?

The torque converter can lock in 3rd gear under certain driving conditions such as a steady cruise speed under 30 mph. If it hasn't locked and you let off the gas, the engine speed will drop down near idle speed and you will not have any engine braking. Press the o/d off button once and I believe you'll get the engine braking effect.

Nothing wrong with your transmission.

+1 to what njmaxseltd wrote.

With the OD switch on (dash light off) no only can you get TCC lock up in 3rd gear, but all gears below 4th (1, 2, and 3) have an overrun mechanism such that if you let off the accelerator the car will coast as if in neutral.

In 3rd with OD on, even if the TCC had engaged, as soon as you release the accelerator pedal, the TCC disengages and the car coasts. Only in 4th will the TCC stay engaged until you push the brake pedal or vehicle speed drops below about 37mph.

If you want engine braking from 3rd gear then you need the OD switch off (dash light on).

Similarly, if you want engine braking from 2nd gear, you need to move the range selector to 2 instead of D.

I have the same problem, and I don't think it's normal. It usually happens to me when I'm going downhill at freeway speeds, no throttle. The RPMs will drop to idle, when I think they should only go to about 1000 or so. Sometimes it will jump back into gear by itself and it jerks, which is why I think it isn't normal. And sometimes the idle will drift up and down between around 2500 and 3000+, which I think is going in and out of OD. If I turn off OD it stays in 3d and it's fine. Sometimes it will be fine for a while, then it will start acting up again. So I drive with OD off for a while until it acts, then turn it back on for a while, then turn if off when it starts getting cranky again.

Mine started more than 5 years ago, so I don't think it's the tranny going. I've replaced the TPS and the tranny solenoids, and I'm using Amsoil, and none of that helped. My next step is to run wires directly from the TPS to the ECU, on the off chance that there's a break in the wires at the infamous harness bend. But that's on my low-priority list.

I have 95 max se auto with 390000 km

What happens the RPM drops to idle when I release the gas pedal doing hwy speed on the third gear

It did not happen before

So I went to dilership today and tranny guy drove it for a while and said that some seal is worn out and it let's out oil when pressure is low. He said he seen that happening before and all seals have to be replaced.
It's like 10 hours job so he suggested to drive it to death and then replace the tranny
