brakes

I recently did a brake job on my '99. The brakes stop the car well but the front squeaks and I have a very loud low tone vibration from the rear when going in reverse. Pwr breaking a little seems to stop the noises for a short time. Both front and rear disks have been turned. Help!

If a shop did the work, take it back to them.

If you did the work, remove the wheels and inspect your work. Turn the discs manually and listen/feel for the same noises you reported. You can always remove the caliper from it's mounts, remove the pads, and reassemble everything.

Check to see that the thin metal protective plate in back of the rotor has not been accidentally bent so that it contacts the rotor. Sometimes, this is a source of noises - it can easily be bent back to it's original position.

Make sure you use(ed) the blue anti-squeal brake-goo on the BACK of the pads between the caliper and the BACK of the pad. If your noise is related to the harmonic vibrations (commonly referred to as "brake-squeal") caused by untreated pads, this may solve your problem.

Road test.

Be sure to allow an adequate break-in period before applying heavy breaking (except in case of emergency). Usually 150-175 miles of light to moderate brake pressure is appropriate to allow the pads to "bed-in" with the rotors.

Good luck!

PS: get a shop manual if you don't already have one - Hayne's or Chilton's. Haynes is better. www.amazon.com

Rear Brake - Noise (Groan/Humming) After Brake Release
Classification:
BR99-002A

Reference:
NTB99-031A

Date:
May 14, 1999

Subject:
1995-99 MAXIMA REAR BRAKE GROAN/HUMMING NOISE AFTER RELEASING BRAKE PEDAL

This amended version of NTB99-031 adds Claims Information for the installation of rear brakes pad retainers. Please discard all paper copies of NTB99-031.

APPLIED VEHICLES:
1995-99 Maxima

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 1995 to 1999 Maxima vehicle exhibits a groan or humming noise from the rear of the vehicle after releasing the brake pedal and moving forward slowly at approximately 5 mph (8 kph), use the procedures in this bulletin to repair it.

The incident may be intermittent and may be duplicated by releasing the brake pedal while the vehicle is stopped and then moving forward at approximately 5 mph (8 kph).

This incident can be caused by a slight tension on the parking brake cable resulting in the brake pads not withdrawing completely from the surface of the rotors after release of the brake pedal. This contact results in a low frequency groan or humming noise.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify that the noise identified by the customer is from the rear brakes and occurs under the conditions described above.

2. If the noise occurs as above, replace the parking brake cables and rear pad retainers with the parts listed in the Parts Information table.

3. Check and readjust the parking brake cable in accordance with the Brake System (BR) Section, PARKING BRAKE CONTROL - Adjustment, of the Service Manual.

PARTS INFORMATION
Sep Kit 44083-4U025
Cable Assembly (Rear Right) 36530-1L005
Cable Assembly (Rear Left) 36531-1L005

CLAIMS INFORMATION
Submit a Primary Failed Part (PP) line using the claims coding as shown.

oh no!!!!!!- he said the "D" word!!!! I just think your pads may be on a bit too tight........try driving to like 90 and then hit the brakes with firm pressure.......do this like 10-15 times to wear the pad off a bit.
