What could cause the gauge to malfunction.

I want to know what could cause my new temp gauge not to work the h/c gauge is not reading. I had a j/y one in, it would work and if the other j/y ones work or the modded gauges work meaning If I take out the fuel gauge and replace the upper portion with the (f/e with the h/c the white plastic with the letters)it would still read. I need help in wondering why the new nissan gauges don't work. I assume it's a defect i turn one in and got the other one and still i am in the same mess.

I would check out the sender unit in the engine.
