Thing you push on door to open the trunk

99 infiniti
can you replace the push button with the newer style that you have to PULL on?
mine keeps getting hit by accident.
does the newer style (oo and up?) fit in the same hole in the door?

theres a safety lock on the trunk near the latch. push it down and it will prevent the trunk from opening with the button, but also with the remote so you will have to it with the key.

the newer button pulls out, the old (99) pushes in- another place where nissan has clueless ergonomics.
My question is will the new button from 00 and up fit in the 99 door hole?

Anything will fit with modification. I think the later button is thinner though because the gas door button is next to it as well. I don't see how you hit it by accident though I can say I have never done that

OP, you could always pull the door panel off and unplug the trunk release switch

I looked at my cars and to put the pull type button into the 4th gen would be a big project.

The 5th gen button is bigger due to the fact the gas filler door button is part of the switch. It is not 2 separate switches. 4th gen = 3 inches wide, 5th gen = 3.5 inches wide.

Because the 5th gen is 2 switches in one, the the wire harness connector is a 4 wire connector vs a 2 wire connector on the 4th gen.

And the real killer - the shape of the door panel. The 4th gen door panel is almost flat where the trunk switch is located. on the 5th gen, the trunk switch is mounted in a curved portion of the door panel. The 5th gen switch is molded to match that curve.

Personally, I wouldn't mess with it. More trouble than it's worth.

I got a better idea for you, that trunk switch is a "normally open" switch and when its pressed it connects the two wires together and opens ur trunk.

You can buy a regular "normally open" push button in radioshack any style you like and mount anywhere you want and just run the wires to it, and disconnect ur current trunk switch but leave it in place.

A good place to mount the switch is in the blank spots near the vents or some where on the under dash panel.

trust me not that complicated you can do it.

Exactly why i wd just disconnect the switch if it was THAT much of a pain.

Mine isn't in the door...it's in the floor. Pull to open trunk, push to open gas door. I like this better!

I'm so happy I'm not alone in flapping trunk due to untimely button activation while driving.

Funnily, I used to do it all the time when I first got the Max, now, not so much.

Thanks for the info. I got hit lightly from behind while ago in traffic and since there was no damage on the rare bumper, I let the guy go but when I got home I found out I cannot open the trunk with remote or the button on driver side door panel, has to use key to open the trunk until I saw this and I opened trunk with key, unlock the latch and remote and button work again! I guess it was that when the car got hit, the safety latch closed due to the shock.

hitting that button unintentionally has never even crossed my mind. how are you hitting it, with your knee or thigh? and what are you doing moving around that much lol.

You guys must have short legs. No way in hell I could hit it with my knee even if I tried or my thigh for that matter. Get a dead pedal and problem solved

In my case it's from being broad in the beam. After I learned to stop carrying anything in my left pocket (and behave myself zipping around corners), problem resolved.

Here's an idea..

-Get a small push button, one that mounts through a small hole
-Take off the door panel
-Find a spot near the trunk release to mount you second button, preferably so that one hand can reach both buttons
-Cut one of the two wires going to the trunk release
-Splice in the new push button

This way you have to push two buttons at the same time for the trunk to open

(ergonomics FTW )

I don't want this to come across as thread-jacking or anything...

Maybe the OP may want to look into possibly wiring the trunk open button with the car either in P or N only...
