Bent threads on CV axle

So while I was at work, my buddy tried to re-seat my CV axle by pounding on it with a hammer. Unknown to me, I got off work and put everything back together only to find that the nut won't go on. It's only the first thread but I'm at a loss here.

Anyone have an experience with this besides just buying a new axle? We tried filing it down to catch on the second thread but it's just not working the say I had hoped thus far. I'm about ready to buy a new one when I get off work but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask y'all.

You should be able to file the thread down. You need to use a very small fine file that can get between the threads. And chances are the nest thread is damaged, bent over or flattened. You just have to work at it. When you are putting the nut on, it may want to go on crooked like it is cross-threading, so you have to hold the nut in the proper position.

I had this happen to me not too long ago, except I bought the axle from a salvage yard, has it all in and ready to go and then went to put the nut on and discovered the same thing. Just like Dennis said, I just took a file and filed down the first thread or two then the nut slipped on over those filed down threads and went on right.

Next time, tell your friend to put the nut on before whacking the spindle with a hammer. That'll save the threads from being damaged.
