2 Step Colder Plugs

What would be the advantages of running 2 step colder plugs? I currently have a CAI, Y-Pipe, 50 Shot NOS (soon to be 70), etc. If it were very advantageous, where and how much can I find these plugs? Thanks all.

One step is enough, two steps will foul too quickly.

Up to about 100hp over stock this is true, over 100 IHMO 2 steps is a good idea. For a nitrous car its a trade off, for a boosted car its just fine because you will heat up the plugs enough to clean them daily.

True, but he commented on having a 50-70 h.p. shot.

But I forgot to mention with the possibility of putting in a 100 shot later.

Mardigras, on another note: Where can I find a 255lph Walbo fuel pump for the cheapest? Thanks.

:o)

Actually, I was going to post shortly on this colder plug topic. I just ordered my supercharger and in doing my homework (and speaking to cool people like cumalot), I have heard I should get one step colder plugs. Sorry to sound 'ignint' but what are they, what do they do and why should I get them? Thanks a mill. guys.

Ramius i forgot to tell you that when you go to 100 shot.. if you are using the stock fuel pressure regulator.. you will have to buy a different fuel jet.. i think its .069 flare jet

I still have 2 more questions not answered by that link. Why does a supercharged engine need colder plugs? And, should I definately get them, or am I o.k. with stock? Thanks.

putting more stress on the engine and thus the engine is running hotter.. colder plugs are better.. i would run stock plugs on stock boost.. smaller pulley then i would run colder plugs..

The spark plug removes heat from the combustion chamber. A colder plug removes more heat than a hotter one. Combustion makes heat. More power means more combustion. More combustion means more heat.

A hot combustion chamber is more likley to detonate too early and "ping". This will eat you motor if it happens on big nitrous!

If you go with a small hp increase, under 50, stock heat range should be ok. 50-100 one step colder. 100 or more 2 steps is a safe bet!

Hmm...Retard ignition timing. Not temperature. As of right now, only 95 maxima via JWT Nitrous ECU can retard the timing. Within the next year, MSD or Safeguard should have a way for us to retard our DIS system. I'm more worry about the transmission. The VQ probably can take 150 shot of nitrous, but the tranny won't able to hold. I will just be happy with 100 shot and run 13s.

Thanks Sprint and Mardi, that helps a lot. Hey, one last quick question. Wether I get colder plugs or not for my SC, I beleive I read once a long time ago that the gap in the spark plug should change by .0X" for every YY horsepower increase. Is this correct? If so, what is the formula? And once again, why?

Thanks brains.

This maybe the reason for the colder plugs from the factory, or the extra power you get from the variable intake, or the hotter climate...

Matt, could you help me out? I've always wondered this... should I be gapping the plugs to .032" instead of .036"? Do I follow whp or crank hp? Thanks.

.035 is what I run, it should be good for you too.

These requirements are all general sugestions. The only way to realy get it right is to put the car on a dyno. Start with a .035 gap and start to open them up, perhaps .003 at a time. Power may increase or stay the same to a point, then at a certain point power will fall off. When power falls off you are getting misfires and you need to back the gap back down to the bigest size that held the most power.

When I had my Scirocco with the full Jacobs Electronics ignition system I played with this a little. I open'd the gaps up from the stock plug gap a little at a time, as they instruct you to, and went for some test drives. After a few runs and opening up the gaps I felt a big drop in power on one run. After that run I went back and set the gaps to the previous size. AKA dyno BUTT2000...

Now the plugs are a little harder to work with on the Max, so I havent tried the BUTT2000 yet. And I am not going to put it on a dyno to check the plug gaps, well mabye one day...

I never had any bad misfires with .043(stock), but I dont want to ever have any bad misfires either. So I go with .035 and it works good enough for me.

Thanks!

I don't want to pull the plugs out just to go down .001", so I might take it down to .034".

Thanks for the links to the links Sprinty. So is the statement ".004" decrease in gap for every +50HP increase" correct?

So would you guys say about .036 for a SCed '96 auto GLE w/ catback, G-Force ECU, and y-pipe? Perhaps homemade CAI.

And you feel one step colder is fine, correct? Thanks again.

Read my above post.

Do not use the standard G force ECU with boost of nitrous.
