Transmission Problem Help
Transmission Problem Help
Sup guys, so I had my car jacked up for almost three weeks waiting for parts to replace my front suspension. Battery died during that time so I jump started it and It fired right up no problem. Just completed passenger side strut and lowered the car. I wanted to move the car over to one side of the garage to make space to work on the drivers side.
I let the car warm up and when I put it into gear I got a grinding sound in reverse and all gears. Reved it up slightly and all I hear is some metal grinding. I shut it off and checked the tranny fluid, ( never had a leak and I use synthetic fluid) fluid looked low with the car warm .. the level was on the cold area on the dip stick and still red fluid. Shut the car off a few minutes and checked again. The fluid was on the H part of the stick with the car off and fluid warm. I started the car up again and same grinding in all gears, the car also will not move.
I have never had any transmission problems prior to this and the car is well taken care for 15 years original owner. Anyone think my transmission could have locked up from sitting jacked up on one side for almost three weeks?
Im going to do a drain and fill to see if that corrects anything. Im hoping the tranny isnt shot.. I was perfectly fine no problems at all before sitting for so long.

I mean, it could be a number of things. What you are describing to me, is what happened when my clutch went out. Loud grinding noise, car would not move.
When you drain your tranny, check for any metal shavings. Also, is your spedo moving when you try to disengage the clutch?

This is an easy fix.
Your cv joint has disconnected from the drive shaft on the passenger side.
Take the band off the boot, put the joint back on the spline shaft and put a new band on. It's a messy job, but an easy fix.

Are you certain of this? My drive shaft boot is torn as well I do need to replace that anyway...so I have to disconnect all that to make sure the joint is connected to the drive shaft?
Fairly easy job as long as you use PB blaster on the carrier assembly to free the old axle up. I first tired just hammering it out for an hour and got it to barley move. I then let it soak a few days with the PB blaster before attempting again and the old axle popped right out. Thanks again njmax, if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have known where to start.

Could be the driverside shaft. If it popped out while working on the suspension you would here grindings as the splines are rotating past each other. Check to see if the driver side CV joint is fully seated in the tranny.
