If the timing chain or alternator belt was loose, would my car be more Noisy?

Please help as there is noise coming out of under passenger side of the engine and cant figure out what it is. Can it be my alternator belt loose or my timing chain? thanx in advance for any info....BTW i have 55k on 95GLE

yeah - if its loose your car will seem as if its running a bit lean, even though it really isnt.....sounds can be decieving
