1998 Maxima???

Whats up all!!
This is my 1st time on this board and seems to be good info/resources. I am here to post a quick question about a Maxima that I probably going to be purchasing tomorrow.

I am looking to get an 1998 Maxima (AT) . and I was cerious on some stats on this motor it has. I know I used to own a 1990 Maxima SE and it has the same design engine,,, but the 98 is way by far more torque, speed and power. Now I like the know the following questions on your guy/gals experience on your Maxima's.

1. What kinda gas milage do you get on it? (Miles per gallon or how many miles can you travel with a full tank of gas).

2. How is the design and reliability on these 4th gen MAX's engine and body?

From my point of view,, the MAX I am looking at seems to run and respond great. It even feels better then my 1996 Acura Integra SE (5-spd) and seems it will woop it in a race.

Well If I decide to get it and bro of mines got an 2002 Moostang V-6, AT and wants to race me,,, but anyways I will do that once I decide to buy it or not. But can you guys give me your feedback on your 4th Gen Max's??

Thanks all!

4th gen

I have a 95SE max and it's an awesome car. Only a few small changes between the 95 & 98's though. On average I get around 350 miles per tank. That's without racing though. Mostly highway as well. (Also it doesn't help that I have a crapload of mods.) The engine in the max has been hailed as one of the best V6's ever built. So you don't have to worry too much about it going out. Seriously though, get the Max...you will love it. I think it would be a close race with the mustang. But either way...you have a more practical car and it'll be cheaper on insurance than the stang. But that's just my 2 cents.

listen, first and foremost, if you are looking to race with it, even a little bit on a few occasions....GET A 5 SPEED!

that said... i have a 98 gxe auto. it's sweet, i love it more everyday. a lot of people on this board actually have well over 150k miles and they still drive it like they stole it AND they are trying to break the sound barrier. so reliability is no question as long as you give it the good lovin treatment on schedule. 190hp, best v6 for quite a few years now(by respectable sources i.e. motor trend i think and companies like that).

a lot of people said they race v6 mustangs all the time and even the auto max beats them.

still....i can't wait to get a stick. i'm selling mine this summer to get a 5 speed max.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I kinda have the idea that the motor are greatly reliable. My main concern is the MPG on them. Basically I had an 1996 Integra and I traded it in for a 97 Montero Sport 4x4 which now I am needing to trade in becasue its sucks up gas like it ain't nottin,, and I am needding to get a ride thats great on gas. I commute to work about 60-70 miles a day just back and forth to work and needing a ride thats great on gas. So are you sure that the MAXIMAS only get about 350 miles on a full tank of gas and thats mojority highway drivn? If so the Maximas have an 19 gallon gas tank and thats like 18 mpg right, so in town drivin I bet is pretty bad. I have the maxima since last night and I put in $7.00 in fuel and it looks like it will be better then the Montero I got.... but any of you have gotten better then 350 miles on a full tank of gas.
I sure can understand that even me myself has an heavy foot and love the take off on the MAX . So i bet even me drivin I bet I'd only get like 300 (I Hope) .

but if any1 else can post up there MPG on the MAX's please do so. I have to go into the dealership today to finalize my financing if I want to get it. Thanks if any1 else gots info on there Max's

I do 90% city driving (pizza delivery) and I get about 350 to a tank as well. The maxima tank is 18.1 gallons. But when have you ever heard of using all the gas in a tank. I drive til the low fuel light stays on all the time (not going on and off as the car sways and dips) and the most I've ever put in it is 17 gallons. That works out to about 20.5 mpg in mostly city driving. On the highway you should be well over 25 mpg.

Nealoc187,

Hey that sounds much better. More then likely its a done deal for me on the MAX. I was just readin the manual at it showed 19 gallons,, but with reserve also. So the info you provided hits the button and I am gonna get it. Thanks all for the feedbacks. Now I just gotta learn about the motors in these puppys and start my modding,,, but more then likely I will do more to the exterior of it.

Hey I never really see people talk about mods from Stillen... does stillen mods really good? Or I am sure allot of people dont use there products b/c IMHO seems over priced.

Thanks again!

check the stickies at the top of this forum, should be like the first 5 or 6 topics. they explain a lot. one thing about the max is that it was designed for 91+ octane, so it might get a little expensive

Nissan says 21 in the city and 28 on the highway. They are very conservative when it comes to estimating (which I think is great). I usually get 28 or so on the highway doing 80+ so I bet it would be better if I drove 55 On average in the Summer I get 25-26 mpg with mixed driving and in the winter it drops to 23-24. And that is with me routinely accelerating hard.

well, you could use regular, but some of these people on the .org reported hearing knocking in their engines when they put it in. i've noticed a difference even when i go down to 89 octane, esp. in acceleration. something about the ignition rate or somethin like that. i seem to get better gas mileage when i use premium. so are you getting a 5 speed or auto?

Ruckus,

I am gona get an AT. I would love to get an 5 spd... but traffic here in Austin, TX Suc booty big time and I hate shiftin when u only move 5 ft ever 5 minutes (lol... a little exzaggeration (probably mispelled)). Plus I dont race any more. Seems like the MAX I am gettin is very nice and the engine runs great... cant seems to see anything wrong as for response or loss of histation in low or top end speeds.
BTW.... is there a governor on the top end speed shut off? If so whats the top speed on the MAX'es??
My acura did 130mph and still had 2000 rpms before even hittin the red line in 5th gear .

Well damn.. 1.19 for Super Unleaded.. DOH!!! I have reg in it today.. acceleration seems Greeeeeaaat!!!!
Time to invest in some Octane Booster at AutoZone!! LMFAO!!!

If it is an SE then there is not a govenor but even if you get another trim line with a govenor there are certain ways to work around it

If you really dont wanna do the super then you can do the middle grade and swap every other time or stay with middle grade for a while then every now and then go super.

Oh BTW... the BOSE factory system in the MAX do any of you run an RCA adapter for a full stereo system w/ amps and subs? if so hows it sound bad engine noise?
I just dunno if the Bose unit itself can really hold quality sound. I do notice that my rear speakers sound kinda blown,, voice coils snds like its poppin if I have the bass more then half way.
