Question about 5th gen. clutch assembly

I am looking for a 5th gen. clutch kit. I saw an Exedy clutch kit (part number 06044) online that looks identical to the one in the group deal section that sells for $165, but much cheaper...$120 shipped. The years listed for this part number are 85-01, so I am thinking this clutch kit isn't as good as the one specifically for the 00-01.

I went to Courtesy and entered the parts separately that have been mentioned in other posts, but the total price is more expensive than the $200 that some are quoting. The following is a breakdown of the cost of each:
Clutch Cover (30210-89F00) - $182.08
Clutch Disk (30100-40U14) - $73.12
Release Bearing (30502-41U20) - $51.81

The total cost is $307.01. Does anyone have a link to get a clutch kit for the 00-01 for around $200?

Also, would there be a difference in the parts from Courtesy and the Exedy kit listed here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Exedy-06044-...520#vi-content

The difference is the pressure plates, it has more force for the 00-01 vs the 4th gen, but the clutch kits are rated around 237lbs of tq. You could get this kit from Southbend that would be cheaper and hold more power. Southbend kits are rebadged exedy kits. I have the HD clutch on my max, I haz boost and no issues. Technically if you are not going FI then the ebay kit will be fine.

I recently bought a kit from southbend. DO NOT get this kit if you are in a rush or want the clutch in a reasonable amount of time. It took them 2 weeks to build and ship my kit. As for their quality, I hear they are top notch. Nothing but good reviews, so I hope I am happy after the install.

Other good clutch options for this car are the Exedy Stage 1 or 5th gen oem replacement. I would get oem if you don't plan on beating on it, but who has 205 ft-lbs of torque under the hood in a 3000lb car and doesn't want to have fun with it. Therefore I would spend the slight extra money on a better than oem kit. Its honestly hard to beat the value of the dxd clutch kits.

I got my stage 2 daily for around $260 shipped from horsepower freaks.

I am reading good reviews about the Southbend clutch. I was going to order a stage 1 from dxdracing, but noticed the stage 2 from horsepower freaks is cheaper. How do you like your stage 2? How would you compare the pedal feel to stock? Have you had any chatter? I don't want anything too stiff as this will be in my daily driver.

Haven't received or installed it yet. Southbend took 2 weeks to build and ship it, something I am not too impressed with. However, I am a member of the celica forums and I know a few guys who were happy using them to launch their 3300lb awd turbo celica all-tracs. So I'd imagine they are pretty good. From what I have researched, they are just reworked exedy pressure plates and discs.

The difference between the stage 1 300ft/lbs and stage 2 315ft/lbs. My pedal felt lighter than stock after the install.

From your post above, you ordered the HD, which is a stage 1. On the Horsepower Freaks website, I can get a stage 2, which will hold a little more as you mentioned, for $250 shipped. This is cheaper than the HD from the link you provided. Do you think a stage 2 will be much more different than the stage 1 as far as effort needed to depress the clutch? I currently have 2001 DEK that is waiting to be swapped into my 97 along with a transmission that is also out of a 2001. It seems like a stage 2 is needed when you have more horsepower than I will make, but the site lists the stage 2 as "daily". So, basically, I can get the stage 2 cheaper than the stage 1 but my concern is stiffness in the clutch and how the clutch engages. Is it possible that the "stage 2" label will vary depending on the manufacturer? Do you think the stage 2 will be ok in a daily driver or do you think I should pay more and get the stage 1?

Get the stage 2, it is cheaper there, if I saw this before I ordered months ago I would have got the stage 2, but like I shared, the difference is only 15lbs of torque so it would be hard to notice a difference between the 2.

Southbend explained to me that with the stage 2 they heat treat the steel on the pressure plate to make it stronger and they remove the rivets on the clutch disc and replace the stock friction surface with their metal impregnated friction surface that supposedly dissipates heat better. They also said pedal feel will be basically the the same as stock, and even if it is heavier, it will be so close that it will likely be almost unnoticeable.
