some newbie questions

hey everyone i posted earlier in the week some questions in the 5th gen section but i also started looking into 4th gen max's.
im selling my evo and im looking for a more reliable car. im past the whole NEED MORE HP stage and now im just looking for something to look pretty and cruise in. i did alot of research on the 5th gens and then i saw some SEXY 4th gens on here and got me thinking about these. in my research i found that a common problem for the 4th gen max's is that there differential bearings tend to go bad around 80,000 miles and the cars im looking at have waaaaaayyyyyyyy more then that. people say the only way to fix it is to basically have your tranny rebuilt. so my questions are
how common is this problem? is it every 1 in 2 5 speeds?
im not going to lie im pretty scared of buying a car with about 140k but if alot of people are getting over 250k strong id feel alittle better so i was just wondering how many miles some people on here have/ whats the average life of the 4th gen max's
and what are some other common problems the 4th gens have?

If I were you I'd consider buying a newer Maxima, with lower miles simply due to rust, and higher mileage of the older ones. The newer the better, even consider a 6th gen since you can probably find one for like 5k pretty easily.

Lol. I actually hope to one day sell my maxima and get an evo!

The 5 speed transmissions are really bad. If its not the differential problems, its the input shaft. I'm on my 3rd tranny already in my 4 years of ownership. Just to give you an idea, my first tranny crapped out at about 100k. I got the car at 72k from my uncle who was the second owner and had the car from about 15k...so basically the car has been well maintained. I took that tranny apart and the input shaft bearing only had like 4 ball bearings in place from shattering and a **** load of metal by the magnet.

From what I've read, the transmissions weren't shimmed properly from the factory and 9 out of 10 rebuilders don't shim the transmissions, so unless you do it yourself, your SOL.

if you sick of tranny problems DONT buy an evo lol look into an sti, the evos have ****ty trannys and transfer cases so all youll be doing is going from 1 car with transmission problems to a faster car with transmission problems lol. and there alot more expensive to fix im sure. i had my tranny built for 2300 installed and i need to rebuild it again not even a year later and i barley beat on my car.
so thanks alot stay away from the 4th gens lol they look amazing with the front lip though. im not a big fan of the 6th gens ill prob stick with a 5.5 gen. thanks again for your help

Lol I hear from the subie guys that sti's have transmission problems too. See they make a gear set for the maxima 5 speed, but I can't justify spending $5 grand on a Maxima transmission. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind having a built $5 g tranny on an evo.

What kinda gold plated transmission you gettin on mang? You got one with diamonds and bling on your transaxles??? I can't justify spending 5 grand on a maxima tranny either... if you wanted to do a 6mt swap I believe you will come in final price tag under a grand mang. And this lil 4th gen right here just got a new tranny from a I30 and she goes strong man, I wouldn't dismiss the 4th gen so soon, unless you love the 5.5 and it speaks to you...

Quaife LSD ~ $1000
Aftermarket gearset ~ $3500
Labor ~$500

I'm not talking about a stock transmission. http://forums.maxima.org/supercharge...peeds-etc.html

i started loving the 5th gens and then i saw some nicely done up 4th gens and those really caught my eye but im really trying to find a reliable car that i dont have to be in the shop every other week. i plan on being really picky when it comes to buying, but theres only so much you can see and ask. can you really put a 5th gen 6 speed in a 4th gen? what else do you need to do the swap? or was that sarcasm and im just missing it?

You can do that, you can do a sentra spec-v 6 speed, there are tons of options and they really aren't super difficult. There are alot of 6mt swap threads over in the all motor section, check em out mang.
