fry my ignition switch ?
fry my ignition switch ?
Well i went to start my 99 maxima se herd nothing but the starter click ok..Well it sat for a week in the cold because i need alxes to be put in ,so i went to jump start it left the key in the ignition well i seen the neg jumper cable smoking so wtf had them on right on both vehicles .. i went in the maxima all i can smell burnt plastic so im sure i fried my ignition switch...I have no power at all , so if i replace it will everything be fine? because i hope i did not do any other damage like frying the computer or anything else ...any suggestion?
It doesn't matter if you leave the key in the ignition (as long as its off). Also, you should not leave doors open or anything drawing power when you hook up a battery or jumper cables. You should not hook the negative cable to the battery on the dead car (hook it on the engine or tranny, prevents the cable from slipping off the negative and hitting the positive).
Did you check fuses?
Where do you smell the burnt plastic?

I smelled right by ignition right were you put the key in to start it ,im thinking the key was not all the way back , fuses are good under the hood for ignition also if it did burn up for some reason will it be ok to replace it and everything will work to start the car? Man i never had this happen ,just hope did not screw up my computer ...
Just a update i took apart my dash like i was going to change out ignition switch everything looks fine nothing looks burnt up , so i hookup my battery which i know is low on juice ,my acc lights came on and tried to start it but just clicks .... So im thinking that the starter is locked up it is cold here and the back feed trying to jump it smoked the solenoid ...So heard a lot things when these starters go and freeze up,the car has about 115000 and i am not the best at electronics......
There is no way for us to know what has burnt up in your car. It sounds like you don't have the mechanical aptitude to fix your car. Check the regional forums for a local ORGer able to come help you.
Well thanks for the remark but some people this is my first time owning one so i thought that"s what a forum is here to help each other to figure out what might be the problem ...So i will try it out myself not everybody is good with electrical stuff ...Oh everybody is not a A1 mechanics either ...Thanks too anyone who helps....
