motor oil for transmission lube?

motor oil for transmission lube?
I see many other transmissions and transaxles specing motor oil of various weights. Many transmissions use sycromesh/motor oil/ATF.
Has anyone here ever used motor oil in a 4th gen 5spd?
I was thinking maybe a 30wt diesel engine oil?
The price of MT90 and even dino GL-4 is getting ridiculous.

best to just use regular GL-4. Redline is about $14 bucks a liter still now
some older gearboxes will specify motor oil, ATF (even some newer ones), etc but unless its specified its not worth screwing around with. for as often as you change the trans fluid, is it REALLY worth cheaping out? most gearboxes you only need a few liters if that so thats like 40 bucks, if money is tight its best to put off the fluid change for a month or two rather than throwing in a non-specified fluid

I went with redline mt90 and it cost me about $85 I think. Only needs changed every 60k miles as compared to the standard 30k. Plus it made my tranny feel so much smoother when shifting. I'd recommend it.
As far as using anything other than a gl-4 I wouldn't chance it.

ive heard alot of different opinions, between pennzoil's synchromesh and the redline stuff. you like that stuff hey? did you change out bulk/nissan stuff for the redline? noticeable difference?

I dont know what was in my tranny before but I immediately noticed a big improvement in the smoothness of the shifts. I'm sure there are better more expensive options but I felt $85 was enough to spend on 5qts of fluid. I have no experiance with any other brands.
