Hand Brake Light

Hey people, I'm hoping someone might be able to give me a hand. I own a 98 Maxima GLE with only 33,000 KMS. For some reason, the Hand Brake Light on the dash remains ON, even though the hand brake has been released. I tested it and checked to see if the hand brake was stuck, by shifting to neutral on a hill, and apply and releasing the hand brake, and it turned out the hand brake unit is fine, it's not stuck or anything, the only problem is that, the icon remains on the dash, even with the hand brake released. I can drive around, and after a little while, it goes away, but once I turn off the car, and turn it back on, the hand brake icon returns and stays. I don't think my brakes are worn out, because they are not emitting a noise.

Any help? Is it a warning? I don't want to go to the dealer, if it's not a serious issue.

On the subject does brake fluid slowy disappear from anyone elses Maximas? Mine has needed filling once in 50k but it always seams it goes down VERY VERY slowly. Like they filled it at 35-40k and now its about a CM below the MAX mark, but still has plently left.

Your brake fluid level drops as your brake pads ware down. The caliper pistons have come out to compensate for the ware of the pads. Pistons out further means you need to fill the void in the caliper with...........BRAKE FLUID.

Thats why the level drops.

Hey, thanx for the info everyone! Went out and checked out the brake fluid. It was damn low! Bought some fluid right away, topped it off, and the icon went away. I guess I'm still a newbie

Thanx again!
