Is it okay to run with out power steering?
97 nissan maxima gle. Power steering pump is making alot of noise and has a real bad wobble to it. Is it okay to run without power steering belt or is it gonna make it impossible to drive. Just need to go a week or so until i can replace the pump.

You'll be ok but stopped or at parking lot speeds turning will be a workout.
|
you can run without it, but as said when youre trying to back out of a parking spot its gonna be a bear to turn the steering wheel. by the end of the week your arms are gonna look like Popeyes lol
|
Lol i have no power steering in my dsm talon. Everything is good except parking. Parking is a *****.
|
The ca will be vey hard to turn, that does impact the safety factor, especially if your driving around town.

Power steering is only needed when the car is at a standstill (or at really slow speeds). Once moving, power steering is no longer necessary and the steering can feel normal and safe. The only concern will be with the rack and pinion over time. Depending on the design, a power steering rack and pinion may wear out sooner when their is no power assist. I have driven manual r&P and actually have an mr2 that came with a manual r&P, you get used to it over time.

Get swole for a week. YOLO.

Thanks for the info. Best response from a forum ive ever been a part of for a noob-ish question.

Turns out crank pully seperated and the outside slot or whatever over lapped the inside slot and ate both belts at once.
|
Ouch. Crank pulley failures are common these days.

Id like to know too because im about to go to o'riellys and blow 200 on an OEM replacement

Having a disconnected power steering rack is different than driving a car with a manual steering rack. You can run with it disconnected, but you're gonna fight it trying to turn it tight while parking driving at low speeds. The remaining fluid inside your steering rack will also work against you since it's not being pumped thru. If you have another car to drive until you can get your Max repaired, i'd recommend doing that.

Well a couple posts up i already put that the pump isnt the problem the crank pully failed. Thanks tho.
