stock air duct question

stock air duct question

I'm trying to resolve a issue with a 1996 gle automatic. I keep getting the map/baro code (1302) and I'm at the point where I think it may be a vacuum or intake leak. My question is about the air duct. It has the square section in the back (under the air filter) and the round section on the bottom where it connects to another section under the battery. Are these 2 points supposed to be clamped or do they just pop in? Both are very loose with a rather sloppy fit. I'm trying to figure out if since these are loose fits if that is causing some kind of vacuum leak.

I also just tested the knock sensor (0304) and found it to be dead (zero ohms). Not sure if it's related or not but that will be getting replaced shortly.

No, these parts are on the atmosphere side of the MAF sensor and have no affect on performance or driveability. Your MAP, or "boost" sensor is located on your intake pipe by the radiator. Check the vacuum hoses, MAP solenoid, and wiring. If you have already downloaded the FSM there are test procedures for these. If you do not have the FSM, get it here;

I removed the MAP solenoid and tested it per FSM. With 12v supplied to contacts, A to B ports had air flow. No voltage to contacts, I had a noticeable difference in air flow between A and C. It did flow through but was not as "passive" per say. The best way to describe it is probably 1/2 of what A to B allowed.

Voltages at both the solenoid and boost sensor are correct per FSM. And I do have vacuum at the boost sensor. Maybe I'll scoop up a few solenoids from the junk yard and see how different they perform on the air continuity test.

If you have the FSM, u can locate all the vacuum lines. Remove and blow through each. There may be carbon buildup somehwere

The stock air ducting is totally ridiculous, first thing I did when I got my max was rip out the stock ducts and put in a cai and man was I glad I did when it came time to replace the starter.

The map/baro code has been resolved. It was a bad solenoid. Hope this helps someone else with a similar problem. Now onto the EVAP Canister purge control valve/soenoid code
