I see so much reference to these aftermarket strut inserts. Are they really important to good handling without ruining the ride quality? How much do they cost? If I can only afford two, front two or rear two?

They seem to be the shock/strut of choice these days...I just ordered some myself. Do some research...http://forums.maxima.org/search.php?...der=descending as there are a ton of opinions/thoughts on this subject. $370-$400 shipped is the going rate now, depending where you buy them from.

They are not inserts, but rather direct replacements. Even better! I would say, buy all four at once. It may cost more, but might as well do it right to start off with. I have had them for about a month now and they are excellent! Even on the soft setting they give a firm controlled and relatively comfortable ride. Best struts/shocks for the Maxima, in my opinion.

If you cannot afford the whole set, spend some time and read through the Chiltons or Haynes manual. If you learn to install it yourself, the money you save will be enough to pony up for the entire set of AGX's.
